New rear speakers

Has anyone put new speakers in the rear doors of their extended cab that are not the standard 4x6 size? I am considering upgrading my speakers in this location and would like to see what everyone has done. I would consider making minor modifications to fit some other sizes of speakers here. Thanks.

I went with Infinity 4x6 plate speakers. 4" woofer 1" tweeter. Fit perfectly, just had to drill the screw holes. They sound great for their application, rear fill. To me it doesn't seem worth the effort to modify for a different size. :banghead:

I replaced my rear speakers on my 2500HD ext. cab.

I bought 4x6 plate speakers in advance of the install. Then I took the side panels off the truck and was bummed. There's room for anything you want to put in there. Just a little tin-snipping and you're good to go. And the panel can be easily trimmed so that the entire 4x6 rectangle that shows from the inside can be opened up to let more sound through.

If I had it to do over again I'd probably put at least 5 1/4" rounds in there. Maybe even 6" rounds. Instead I have a little 4" woofer and 1" dome tweeter, sounds ok, but the physics are just not there for it to have any low end.

I'm glad you asked this question. The rear speakers in my 02 Silverado are dying, so I need to replace them soon. I just don't know how to remove the rear door panel, where the magic hidden clips are and so forth. I should probably do the fronts too.

Any help is appreciated!

I did the tin snipping because I couldn't use my 5 1/4 hole saw. Worked real good. No distortion due to the panel covering part of the speaker. You could get 6 inchers in there as well.

Right!

I did a whole change out of my '03. There's really no good reason to put larger speakers, just better ones will do the trick. I ran Focal's up front and Pioneer in the rear. No one had a better sounding system when i had that truck. Sadly, it sold.
