I recently purchased a 1999 GMC Yukon 4x4, 4 dr. There was no owner's manual, so I do now know how to switch the electronic 4x4 into neutral. It's the last year of the old body style and it has the in dash, electric 4x4 switches. Thanks.

If you look at the selector switch, you will see there is a line connecting two of the buttons and the N indicator. If you press those two buttons for about 10 seconds, it will shift the xfer case into N. You will need to have the transmission in N to do this.

Ok, thanks. I'm going to go out to the truck and try this.

Ok, that didn't work. There are no connecting lines. Here's a pic. Anything other suggestions?

Apply the Parking brake.

Put the transmission in Neutral.

Press the 2 HI button to put it into 2HI (not auto).

Simultaneously press 2 HI and 4 LO for 10 seconds.

It should shift into N and illuminate the light.

Put it in R for one second, then in D for one second, then put it in Park. <-- I guess this is for towing?

Press 2 HI (or any other button I think) to take it out of N.

I snagged this from an Avalanche forum, so it may be wrong, but the procedure sounds much the same as mine although mine doesn't have Auto, nor anything near the same as your pushbuttons.

If this doesn't work, I tried...

That's how the 1999 Tahoe owner's manual describes it, and the switch is the same as pictured above. I'd say you're right.

Spend the money on the owners manual. You will have plenty of interesting reading. You and everyone else should insist on the manual from a dealer or private owner. If they want to sell the vehicle they will get it. Been there done that.
