ODB II Data

Are ODB2 data readers compatible with all vehicles that are new enough to have the hookup? How helpful are they - do they display codes or actual components ("E0012" vs. "Thermostat", etc.)?

Most OBDII readers will read any code. There are generic codes (any reader will read these on any car) and manufacturer specific codes. Check to see what the reader supports.

As for what they relay in terms of information depends on the reader. Some just give you the DTC, ie P0146 or whatever. Some will give you the code and the description, ie P0146 - Insufficient activity O2 sensor bank 2. Disclaimer...I don't know if that code is a real code, just one I made up for demonstration.

All cars since 1996 are OBDII compliant thanks to the EPA. For these vehicles, the smog test is done my hooking up to the DLC (data link connector) and these are a universal match. A cheap reader will cost $30 or so and will only give you the codes. Spend about another $20 or so and you can get one that will give you descriptions, or just check the repair manual (ie Chiltons or Haynes).

Another note...if you have more than one code, there is (99% of the time) one cause for all the codes and might not be the sensor, etc. If there is only one code, ie IAT sensor throws a code but nothing else, it typically is the sensor.

A reader just gives you a code it will work with any 96 and up vehicle. They are not much help in repair. You want to spend a little more and get a scanner. It will read codes but also read freeze frame data, give real time readings from all the sensors, and better ones will do logging for the hard to figure out problems. I like the computer program ones, if you have a laptop (some even a palm) they are not that expensive. They are hands down the best diagnoses equipment.
