Those with 285/70/17 BFG AT KO's

According to the BFG site, they indicate pressure at 65psi. Is this not way extreme? I am on my way to get my new tires installed (hopefully they dont rub with 1.5" of torsion bar crank), but was likely going to tell the tire shop to inflate with about 45 psi.

What do most guys run? BTW this is on a 05 GMC crew 1/2 ton. I dont do any real off-roading and winter is upon me (at least in my city)

Any suggestions would be great

Thx

42 psi on all corners. Any more than 50 and it will feel like you are riding on rocks. Keep in mind I have an HD with the Duramax up front. This is my fourth set of BFG's and I have experimented with the pressure, and found that 42 (on my truck) is perfect for wear, traction, fuel mileage(rolling resistance) and ride. Keep in mind if you go too low that the tires will heat up and wear pre-maturely. On another note, I rotate every 6000 miles (with good front end alignment) and they seem to be equally worn out at about 60K miles.

I have that exact size on my Z71 Sub...37psi. The ride and wear is perfect. I rotate every 5K

Don't pay attention to the numbers on the door. Those #'s are for the factory tires that came on the vehicle. If i followed what my door says - my BFG's would be running 30psi.

thx guys

The tire shop inflated them all to 35psi. I bumped it up to 40psi. I will see how they wear at that pressure. I may bump up to 45 in a while.

Other that that, I love the tires. I raised the bars about 1.5" to level the truck and with the combination of the tires, I like the stance much better now.

thx again

I have 285/75/16 and run 38-40 psi. I toyed around but this seemed to give me the best overall ride and wear. On a truck you might be able to drop the rear psi a little if you aren't carrying a load.

I have cooper 285 75 16

Tire store put them at 35

I put them at 40 front 40 rear. Rides better, rear could be a little lower unloaded.

If I rotate them religiously every 8000km (approx 5000 miles), do u think 40psi all the way round is too high. Or should I go down a few?

I obviously dont want to start cupping the tire.

thx again

You guys that moved up a size on your trucks from 265 to 285.....did you have speedo recalibrated or just left it? And what was the cost to do it?

Cheers

Got my speedo fixed up with the Wester's tune. I don't think it would be off too far on the trucks. Mine was off around 7% but I was going from 265/70 to 285/75. I think the trucks get 265/75 from stock so they won't be off quite as much.

I just got mine put on Monday, 285 KO's. They fit just fine without crankin the bars (i like my ball joints the way they are  ) I had it done at a dealer by a buddy so he didnt charge to recalibrate the BCM. I was just gonna deal with the speedo dofference but apparently the recalibration for different size will also have an effect on the operation of the ABS! Had the speed sensor recall done at the same time. I've got em aired up to 42F/48R thats what i had my old burban set to so I'll see how they want to wear. And yes rotate them every 6K at least.

Dayyum they're fiiiiine....might not be too embarrassed to post a pic now.( :( GM OE rubber)

I'm running 50 all around in mine. Don't think it rides rough, stiff bit not rough. They seem a but poochy unless they're at 55, but it is too rough for me at 55.

Did you crank up your t-bars on your truck too with the 285's? Looks like it still has a little rake to it. Black with the blackwalls out looks mighty fine on your rig!! :dupe:

    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver.
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
