2003 Yukon Steering Intermediate Shaft

I just bought a 2003 Yukon Z71 with 45,000miles. When I did a history on this vehicle I found that the intermediate steering shaft was replaced in the past:

"03/12/2004 867024 # E7700 - SHAFT, STEERING INTERMEDIATE - REPLACE 24376 miles "

My questions are:

1) When the shaft was replaced, was the replacement shaft an improved design over the stock shaft or was it just the same as the old shaft?

2) Also, did these replacements (I assume there were thousands) result in a permanent solution to the problem?

3) Do the new installed intermediate shafts require periodic maintenance?

Thanks,

Brian

1. That date seems to be before the new design was available, but time flies and I could be wrong on that.

2. No. We've gotten some of the new design shafts back in with a clunk.

3. No, but see #2.
