Tire change - MPG loss

I recently installed a set of Bridgestone Revo’s to replace the worn out original Firestone Wilderness AT’s (same size) on a 2001 Z71 ext cab, 5.3. I’ve experienced a 3 MPG loss in gas mileage coincidental with the tire change. It also seems to be downshifting to hold speed on hills in places where it didn’t before. Dealer put it on the analyzer, no codes. Changed the fuel filter and cleaned injectors, no change. Tires were expensive enough without having to continue to pay for them each time I fill up. Went from about 16.5 MPG in mixed driving to 13.5 seemingly overnight. I have lost 60 miles to a tank of gas. Anyone else experience a big change in mileage when installing these tires? Any idea what else could have happened?

I don't think I lost that much, but I too experienced lower mileage when I switched the tires. I think the tires are just that much heavier than the P-rated factory stuff. I had the standard "Americrap" tires on mine.

 

It's also possible that you just got your first tank of oxygenated winter fuel too if they do that in your area. My last tank's MPG was really crappy compared to the previous few weeks. It's either the winter fuel or the fact that my battery and cable were on their last breath (just died this past weekend) and was causing the computer to have fits.

Incredible difference, especially since the size is the same. On my '03 a few years ago, when I switched to the Dueler AT Revos, my gas mileage improved by about 1 - 2 mpg. I'm wondering if the tire pressure is correct?

I can see tire pressure having an effect, but not the tires themselves. Maybe if you went to some very knobby tires...

The tires selected by the MFR's are the best for fuel economy, smooth ride & handling. Just because the tire is the same size does not mean its the same as far as rolling restance.

:chevrolet: Noticed that when I switched from the factory 'highway treads' to a Kumho LT rated tire with more aggressive tread, that I too lost gas mileage. Seems like the loss was on the order of 1.5 MPG. I remount the highway treads for the summer months and the gas mileage increases. Now it may be a seasonal deal but even on warm days in the spring and fall the mileage is less with the more agressive tires. It may be a difference because of gasoline blends for winter but I don't think so.

Does anyone know when they are going to force the tire co.'s to label each tire rolling resistance? I remember reading that Big Brother was going to mandate the tire manufactures to get independent testing on each tire on their rolling resistance. So we as the consumer can use that on helping us pick out a tire that won't kill our MPG.

In addition to rolling resistance, there is up to a 3 pound weight difference between tires (from what I can tell). I compared my stock Wrangler STs to pretty much every other tire at Tire Rack.com The ST's are only 31 pounds. Everything else is about 3 pounds more. I'm sure that would play at least a small role.

Thats a very good point. Every pound counts even unsprung weight. Thats exactly why the MFR's watch every ounce. Areodynamics are also a big part in fuel mileage.

I think 3 mpg is a huge loss for changing tire brands. I don't know what size tires you are running.

 

If you compair a Firestone Wilderness AT 265/70R16 that weighs 36 lbs and takes 681 rev's per mile VS Bridgestone Revo's that weighs 41 lbs and takes 679 rev's per mile, there is close to a 15% weight difference per tire. As per tire rev's per mile they are very simular by 2 tire rev's, but not taking into consideration that your old tires had been wore out. Also both brands of tires are max 44psi.

 

A friend of mine put Revo's on his truck and his mileage went up 1 mpg, he had crappy Generals. I think it's a combo of cold weather and gasoline blends.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
