Have a question about posi unit

To start off, i have an 02 GMC Sierra 2wd rcsb 5.3/auto trans. My rear gears are 3.42s according to the RPOs in the glove box. I've searched on the forum and have read some things but I dont quite understand what i need to do. I do not have the G80 locking rear differential. I want to replace this limited-slip with a posi unit. In order to do this, can the posi unit just be put in the rear end w/o having to get a new rear axle and can i keep the stock gears? Also about how long will this take to do so i can figure about how much this should cost me. Also, i've read something about the dealers being familiar with the eaton G80. Is this the unit i want to go with? Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks,

Coop

I had an Eaton limited slip put in my 01 ecsb. Money well spent, cost me 650$ installed at a local performance shop. I left the original 3.42 gears in. Definately worth it to pay a pro to do it , the clearances must be set exactly or your rear will whine and howl.

I'm not making sense of your question, we all know I'm retarted, but sounds like you are wanting a "G80" limited slip. This "G80" for your truck was built by Eaton. So I would definately recommend the Eaton unit. When one is familliar with how they function, what they were designed for, and most importantly how to manipulate yours to function properly when you need it, they perform flawlessly. I have read where lots have had issues with "mine never locks when I need it, mine won't stay locked, mine locked and I didn't want it to...so on and so forth." But for me with careful throttle useage I am capable of locking mine and keeping it locked. Personally it just took me getting familliar with my truck. The Eaton web-site states that most drivers won't even notice the unit engaging, you will if you know your truck. I know you didn't ask for all that but I keep reading about people having issues, and it seems more from lack of info. rather than a poorly designed unit, because it isn't.

ANy hints on how? When I am stuck in real deep snow, I can not get it too lock. In a situation where I need a very light right foot to get out, maybe I am not reaching the 100rpm (approx 10 mph) difference to get it to lock.

Thanks.
