2000 GMC radio on/off via turn signals

Hello all,

I recently bought a 2000 GMC Sierra 4x4, factory am/fm single cd radio.

Great truck except the radio turns on and off whenever it feels like it. Will work fine for days, then for several days the turn signal switch, or the power lock switch will turn the radio on or off - a good percentage of the time, but not always.

When the radio turns itself off, the cd eject works, and the recall button will display the time briefly, as if the truck is off, but will do nothing else. Hitting any/all of the radio buttons will not turn the radio on, neither will pounding the dash or yelling profanities at it.

 

So far, there is no identifiable pattern to what turns the radio on or off. Is the problem within the head unit or some other GM mystery switch?

Whenever there's a bizzare electrical problem, like this one, I start by looking at grounds. Lack of a good ground can cause all sorts of weird behavior.

 

It doesn't seem likely it's the radio itself, though possible. Is there any aftermarket junk in this truck? Pull the radio and see what might be patched into the harness.

Nothing added to the truck - it's all original. Dealer has taken the radio out, checked all wiring to it, all appears fine. Can't identify a problem, so replacing the radio is the dealer's first guess at a diagnosis.

 

A bad ground sounds plausible, the truck also occasionally loses the power portion of the power steering, only momentarily and at parking lot speeds.

Other than the obvious battery connection, where are the other grounds?

I would try pulling the radio out and putting a test light on it's power souce wire, the switched ignition wire, if the light goes out when locking the doors or whatever the problem is truck related not radio. That is unless my theory has a gaping hole in that I'm not seeing right now. :sigh:

Update: I had the dealer check the grounds, he assures me they're all o.k.

I installed another radio (used, from similar year truck) as a test. The replacement radio does the same thing, so the problem isn't in the radio.

 

Under the theory that the ground(s) is the problem, I hard wired a ground line from the radio housing directly to the negative battery terminal.

This didn't solve the problem. The radio still turns off intermittently, and hitting the power lock switch or turn signals will either cause the radio to turn on or off, but not when you want them to.

The dealer is suggesting replacing a door switch, $148 for the switch.

Is it plausible that a door switch could cause this phenomenon?

 

I'm close to tossing the factory radio, and installing an Alpine the old fashioned way (no GM computer interference).

Hello all,

I found the problem!

There is a jumper wire somebody (I assume not GM) poked into the fuse panel at the driver's end of the dash that connects the 20 amp fuse for the doorlocks to the relay for the drivers side power lock. The wire had partially crept out of the fuse socket, causing an intermittent bad connection. When the radio would turn off by itself, apparently hitting the power door lock button re-established a connection, and allowed the radio to turn back on.

Removing the jumper wire causes the radio to have no power at all. Reconnecting the wire results in a normally working radio - no more intermitent on & off.

 

I have no idea why the power locks' jumper wire is related to the radio, but apparently it is, at least on my truck... I also have even less of a clue as to why the turn signals caused the radio to turn off, but at least for now, that problem is gone.

 

If somebody can explain to me why the two are related, please do.

    • Length/amount of data capture will be important to consider, sifting through 5 minutes of a data log can be enormous when it is stored in milliseconds. Being able to find the 'event' let alone decipher it.   Presumably the driver would notice something and hit a button to capture the 'window' of data. That window has to be large enough for the operator to recognize the event and react accordingly.    The data has to be able to be retrieved easily.   The data has to be able to be understood. Which is the biggest challenge, dealer techs won't even know what most of it is and would likely not even look at it if an owner brought it to them. Meaning the owner, the least educated/qualified, trying to understand it.    How will the data be presented? Could specific PIDs be selected and a timelapse graph be watched? How will a specific value be noted as abnormal? Additionally, a good data logger would be able to 'learn' normal values for a specific vehicle and flag abnormalities automatically. It could in theory watch parameters degrade over time and suggest maintenance as needed. (If the MAF reading begins tapering off for a given set of other readings - MAP, throttle position, Ambient, etc.. a flag to check air filter.) With the amount of data available, a device (really the vehicle rather than an additional accessory) should be able to do more than issue a DTC. It should be able to run the full diagnostic suite automatically and present a solution rather than a code. (It's not the 90's anymore). The technology is available for the vehicle to not just say "P0087", it should know low fuel pressure, check other PIDs to narrow down the problem itself, and determine if it is a lift pump, high pressure pump, regulator, leak in the fuel line, clogged filter, etc. Even if it can't narrow it down, it should be able to guide the user to the likely problems.   This would be a major problem for dealer service departments, which are the manufacturers customers it is in their collective best interest to NOT have this available to the consumer.   Further, if the owner is going to be the primary consumer of the data, it's got to be at a consumer price point vs. dealer only specialty tool price.   This group is more 'involved' in their vehicle than general public/consumer and will have knowledge, experience, needs and desires that are quite different from the market at large.

    • Lets see if I can sum up two pages of nothing useful.    You want to refute your own governments data of the "Purchasing Power" Index FOR THE ENTIRE USA and its territories replacing it with the experience of a single family and its business and label that reality?  Then pound on that for a week hoping it will find traction?    Stan, I've told you several times. I don't do irrational. There are more people in the USA than your family.    I'm pretty sure this tread is so blown up. I'll give you a few days or months if need be to post yourself silent then I'll see if I can find enough parts of the train to reassemble it. 
    • Facebook groups hate VSE, poor customer service; their responses to criticisms are pretty poor for a reputable company. I'm not a customer, haven't bought anything from them, but how they handle themselves on social media is a definite "No" for me. 
    • $10,000 for a transmission?   Pretty sure I could buy all the parts, tools, and education to rebuild it myself for a quarter of that amount.   or swap it out with a new one...
