4x4 wont work

Alright i need to know if im doin this right.... so i get stuck in some mudd...i put my truck in neutral then put the parking brake on shift the lever to 4wheel high put it back in drive release the parking brake. NOT IN FOUR WHEEL AT ALL. do i need to check this out or am i not doin it right. i have a 1997 chevrolet silverado i really need an answer.
