I know that OnStar is supposed to turn off the anolog systems, I think it was supposed to be Jan 1. Is your OnStar digital or anolog?

I know somewhere on here they said that digital on-star will be in 06 models, It's kinda crap that you have a new truck and it has old technology.

Not until January 1st of 2008.

After that On-Star is not going to support analog systems.

Well, I said screw it and went straight to the source (for what it's worth) and called OnStar. They said that the light goes red when the vehicles unit is having trouble communicating with the onstar network. Not an issue if your not a current subscriber like me, but something to keep in mind. If you are a current subscriber and the light is red, you basically out of luck as for contacting OnStar for help.

OnStar also stated that this is something that the dealer would have to address and/or adjust.

If you say the the phone number one digit at a time - you have the analog system.

If you say the whole number sequence - you have the digital system.

For a charge of $549.00 the dealer will change out your analog system to a digital one and that includes 3 years of the safe and sound package. Actually it's a little cheaper than 3 yearly plans. If you're going to spend the money on the service anyway, have it changed when your plan is up. Plus you get 30 minutes of calling time for 60 days. Woohoo!

When you talked to the onstar rep, was he able to tell your location?

Onstar works through the radio for its audio. The chime is generated by the radio and played through the left door speaker. Is there some relation between your red onstar light and the lack of a chime... no idea. Need to do some looking at it with a scanner and see what's going on.

The OnStar status light will only turn red for three reasons:

-Open or shorted GPS antenna connection

-Open or shorted cellular antenna connection

-Internal VCIM issues, failures

The light won't turn red for a network or BCM failure (i.e. Class 2 etc) because the unit will not even power on (or will shut down) if there is a loss of Class 2 communications.

You either have a loose or broken antenna connection, or a VCIM that's failing. The light will not turn red if you are in an area with no cellular coverage or for any other reason like that. In fact, I've placed calls to OnStar while in "red" mode, and the light just blinks red during the call, like it would in "green" mode.
