engine advice

I am building a 70 shortbed and want some opinions on the engine/tranny to put in. I was thinking LS1 but hear the price may be a little too high... Does anyone have any ideas on a strong fast engine/tranny? btw what vehicles can I get an LS1 or similar outta?

what is your budget? and what are your performance goals? what are your mileage expectations?

Need to know these things to give any good advice.
