Wheel Hub

Its an 01 2500HD Chevy with 63k miles with the 6.0 auto.

 

I need new wheel bearings. Can I just replace the bearings for around $20, or do I need/should replace the entire hub?

 

It makes a squeakings sound when going straight, and more so when turning. It also makes a clunk sound. The tie rod ends are in good shape and the ball joints dont move when I "shake" the wheel with my hands when its on the lift. So thats why it makes me belive its the bearings. I just dont know If I need to spend the $200+ on a hub of if I can float by just on the bearings.

I don't know if you could find just the bearings they might be able to be replaced. GM only sells the whole hub and we've never tried replacing bearings.

Well, the auto store has the bearings (inner and outer). But I was wondering If once I replaced the bearings, if the bearings could wear out again, due to something within the hub causing the bearings to wear prematurley...

 

Also, is 63k miles normal for the hub to be replaced on the driver side.

 

This is also a plow truck with T-bars cranked 4-5 turns

I don't know if one could say it's normal, since we see plenty trucks over that mileage that don't need hubs, but it happens.

 

It's not the hub's fault. It just holds the bearings. Most likely, water gets past the seal and things go downhill from there.
