Headliner Problem

Vehicle: 2004 Z71 Sportside X-Cab

(4-door)

The driver's side headliner is coming off the trim portion. Both the front and rear side. It seems that it was cut too short and the trim won't press it in order to keep it from separating. Took it to the dealer, they try to shove it back inside, but it won't stay. Service rep said it was a common problem and there is nothing they can do about it (design flaw). He looked for any TBs depicting this problem but couldn't find anything. Since it's under warranty, I mentioned that the whole headliner needs to be replaced. Again, he said it can't be fixed.

Have any of you experienced this problem? Is there a technical bulletin out there?

What are my options besides living with it? I'm worry that with time the whole thing is going to fall off when wind draf starts pushing insid the headliner.

Thanks!

go to another dealer and get it fixed. I would also call GM and complain. If it is under warranty then they need to fix it.

I've got a '05 X-Cab and after 2 months of owning it the drivers side and passanger side did the samething. I had taken it back to the dealer and they replaced the headliner (had taken almost 2 months for it to come in). Fixed the problem for about 2 weeks and the drivers side came down again. Went back to the dealer and they pushed the drivers side back up. This lasted a whole day. As of next month I have had the truck for a year and the drivers side is still not fixed. The dealership talked to the local GM Rep and he claims that there is no problems with the headliners in the X-Cab trucks. Right now I am waiting to see what the dealer wants to do. They have mentioned replacing the headliner again.

That bites. What's going to happen if the new one has the same problem. I'm waiting for GM to call me back to see how are they going to fix the problem. My original suggestion was to replace the headliner, but I guess that might not even fix the problem. TWO MONTHS to get the part!! My main concern is that if you have your windows down, wind draft will start flowing through the headliner opening and eventually the separation will get larger.

It really sucks, GM quality is going down the drain, no wonder the Silverados are getting those bad overall reviews. According to the latest Consumer Repor survey the reliability for Siverados is below average (just like the F-150s).

Please let me know when you get the part and if the problem is finally solved.

Thanks!

You can't blame reliability for being so poor can you?

Would you build a good quality product for your employer knowing they are going to give you the boot in the azz and close your plant? I would be doing a crappy job too.

Can't blame poor parts, gm has screwed themselves big time this go around. I don't look for them to be around another 10-20 years. Especially if toyota comes out with their 3/4 ton diesel trucks.

I am a die hard GM guy though, but slowly fading. I've got an 05 F150 4x4 super cab work truck. I pegged over 30k on it in 8 months, and it gets the hell beat out of it every day (Runs 12+hrs a day, 0-80-0 driving, etc) and it hasent had the first problem.

My GM has had minimal minor nit pick stuff but I think I got lucky when I picked up an 04. 05-06 I hear is much worse.

Well, I just noted the passenger side headliner coming off the trim (just like the driver's side). Will take to dealer tomorrow to have the "interior/upholstery" guy take a look at it. If he can's fix it, the service manager said they will replace it.

There was a 2005 Z71 X-Cab at the dealer the other day made at the same plant than mine (Indiana) and had the same headliner problem. I'm starting to think this is something common.

It's not really fixable. The headliner has to be replaced, or it it has to be removed and repaired by a good trim shop, which is the route we go. Pretty common problem.

If you have a crew cab, the only way to get the headliner out is to remove the rear glass and pull it out that hole.

Same thing on my 2004 X cab. Fixed twice, came out again. I guess I will mention a new one to them.
