Flex Fuel Filter Replacement

I read all the posts about needing, or at least making it easier, the special tool to remove the quick disconnect end of the E85 equipped vehicles fuel filters. I have such a Tahoe.

Anyway, here are some pics of the new filter, GF847. If you look closely at the disconnect, it just has tabs you depress (see second pic). Is this a newer design to eliminate the need for the tool? If so, I could still need it to get the one on the vehicle now off right? Or is this the very connector that does require the tool?

Yup, you need that special tool. My advice is (and I've replaced one of these) instead of going out and spending 30 bucks or so on that tool which is also real flimsy and breaks easily, just take it in to a dealer and have them replace it for you. That filter is in a real tight spot and its a real bear to disconnect that fuel line even with the tool. Probably a lot safer too and no aggravation.

For me, this is more principle now than anything. I won't have the dealer do it!

So what does this stupid tool do, just depress the tabs? Are the little tabs that my fingers are on inside the hose as well?

Well, just bought a Lisle version of the tool on eBay for $10.50 and only $3 shipping. For $14 total, I'm happy I can now do it myself.

Just be carefull then. That filters in a tight spot. Also I dont think that is the right filter you show. I had to go back 3 times to get the proper unit from the local parts guy. Yours is the same model year as mine and mine didnt look like that. There were no plastic tabs on mine. There is a circular spring clip in the fuel line that you have to push back with that tool.

The 2 tools look the same. Look closely at what pattern they form when they are closed. At least I think they do.

As for the filter, two dealerships, and the AC Delco site, confirmed GF847 for a Flex Fuel, engine code Z, 2002 Tahoe. They said the GF847 was a new number, which superseeded previous ones.

I'm thinking that maybe they redesigned the disconnect a bit, perhaps so you don't need the tool afterall now. Maybe I won't need the tool anymore, once I get it off (the one on there).

I'd be curious to see a filter with the clip you mention.

As for access, it's not in an awkward spot. Yours was? It's right on the inner frame rail, driver's side. I'll be on my back doing it, but it's not cramped or anything.
