To my knowledge none of the engines in '06 trucks have the DOD system. However, the '06 Impala SS with the 5.3 does have the DOD. Personally, I think this system is worthless, complicated, and another major source of potentially very annoying problems down the road. They should provide a selector switch so that the driver could turn the system on or off. That would be OK by me.

Why would you want to slow down our dependence on foreign oil. We a a country will have to cut down our use of oil and you not being positive. Gas here in MI this week is $2.55 and its not even summer. Last summer the high was $3.50+ so this year expect $4. Any way to cut our usage will help. The DOD works very well Dodge has it and GM could have had it in 2004 but politics always comes into play.

You have to get real the cost of gas is going up up up.

I think I am doing my part. I use my truck only for hauling and towing and occasional long trips. It is not my everyday driver. I drive a Mazda 626 with a manual tranmsission to work. My previous truck was a compact Nissan pickup with a 5 speed manual, which I used for 10 years.

 

Instead of these marginally effective DOD systems, why not a 120-160 HP efficient turbodiesel in a smaller vehicle and a 5 speed manual transmission? Hmm? Instead of monstrosities like 8.1 liter V8, 6.0 Vortec Max, and 360 HP Duramax?

It's all in the eye of the beholder.

 

What about 2500 square ft houses for a man and wife with no kids? They're sucking down the energy too for heating and air conditioning.

 

So it's not just what you drive, it's how you live.

 

In the end, though, it's what you make. Spending that money consumes energy, be it fuel oil, natural gas, or jet fuel for frequent vacations to the some island paradise.

 

If a guy decides to spend his money on gas for his 'vette, or his truck, it's his right to choose, just as much as it's another guy's right to make the alternative choice for a huge house or a boat.

 

There's no point singling out people's vehicles, when there are many other types of energy consumption that are just as extravagant. To each his own.

I thought this thread was about the DOD systems. And my point was that these systems will do very little by themselves to improve fuel economy.

2 to 3 miles to the gallon isnt anything to complain about and still retaining the same all about performance on the highway.

From what I heard, Dodge trucks with this system gain only about 1 MPG and only on the highway. I am concerned with additional mechanical complexity and long term effect of this system on the life of the engine. Subsequent repair bills may wipe out those fuel cost savings in a flash.

 

If you buy a stock 4X4 pickup, put oversize tires on it and install a 4 inch lift kit, you have just negated all the possible benefits any DOD system could bring.

IMHO gas mileage was the least of your concerns when you purchased a truck equipped with a 4.8/5.3/6.0/8.1/Duramax engine.

As added ammunition, I just read a complaint by an'06 Impala SS owner. His car is equipped with the DOD system. The sticker says 28 MPG highway. He is barely gettting 22. Don't believe everything GM tells you.

You do have all the power when needed and the conversion from 4 to 8 cylinders is flawless. Many car companies are jumping on the DOD system: Chrysler, GM and Acura to name a few.

 

Gas mileage may not be a concern to everyone but it's a major concern to the government who mandate each car company comply with emissions and fuel economy standards which increase each year.

Should read, "don't believe everything the EPA tells you..." GM, or any other car manufacturer, doesn't set those mileage reports. DOD is a good thing but doesn't kick in if the criteria used to activate it doesn't come up.

Either the owner was driving his 06 SS very hard or he figured his mileage wrong. I recently drove an 07 Tahoe 4x4 with 5.3 DOD and on the highway trip averaged 24.3 with a load. It ran flawless and was almost impossible to notice deactivation of cylinders.

24.3 MPG from a 4X4?. From the computer read out, right? Did you refill the gas tank and calculate the mileage from that?
