Getting headers, which should I get?

Have a 2001 GMC HD2500 crew cab 6.0 with 6" lift and 35's. Exhaust manifold cracked and I figured I'd be up in there anyway, so I'll put on some headers. Did put on a magnaflow exhaust, from cat back.

I am not to much of a mechanic, but figure with some help I should be able to accomplish this.

Question is, I have been looking on a few sites and like the JBA's. But they have the options of with EGR and without EGR, don't know what that means. And the Gibsons have one ball flange or none, If some one could point me in the right direction I would apprecitate it.

And of course, it anyone has put them on their truck, which header you have and your thoughts. Much apprecitated,

I put the Dynatech headers on my truck. Was able to get the kit with high flow cats as well with the headers.

As for EGR some trucks have it and some don't. May have to look in a mechanics book to find the exact location to find out if you have one. On my 5.3 it would have been on the passengers side of the engine.

On the Dynatech headers it came with the connection point. Since I don't have the EGR I just left the cap in place to keep the tube blocked.

Total time for me to install by myself was about 8 hours. Learned a few things on my own that of course the directions didn't tell you how to accomplish.

Have a good day.

EGR is exhaust gas recirculation. I have Gibson headers. On my '99 5.3 there is a braided metal hose about 1' in diameter connected to a flange on the front of the passenger side header, this is the EGR. The other option is air injection. I believe this is on California emmisions vehicles only and I think it connects to the drivers side header. Mine has the ball flange connection. This is where the header connects to the exhaust. I don't know which flange is on a 6.0.

If you live in a state which permits it- go with the Long Tube Headers. Dynatech's are top-notch but there are cheaper ones also. I live in California and there are illegal so make sure you check first.

Shorties like the JBA only offer insignificant increases in HP and TQ. The stock manifolds are almost as good.

Whatever you decide make sure you get the ceramic coating!

I installed Gibson headers and cat back exhaust on my '03 GMC Sierra 6.0L 1500HD. The headers were very easy to install. I live in Calif. and my truck does not have an EGR connection. They do have the ball mounts to connect to the factory exhaust pipes. This is the second set of headers and exhaust I have owned from Gibson, I had a set on my '02 Dodge Dakota 4.7. I like the sound, it has a nice throaty tone without being annoying or droaning while driving on the highway. I have heard a lot of trucks and cars with Flow Masters, to me they are just too loud. But then I am getting older and appreciate the mellow tone over the loud noise that I liked when I was younger. Bottom line, It is an individual decision, you have to decide what you like.

Oops, I need to correct my own post, The headers for my GMC do not have ball mounts, they have flat flanges with a metal O-ring. I replaced the O-ring when I installed the headers.

Like I said I am getting older
