aftermarket intake kit

If you do a search there are many other posts about stuff like this...

But, I have a volant cold air box on my truck. Don't expect large performance gains, the only thing I noticed was an increase in throttle response and a small increase in gas mileage.

The reason I ask is because I have an 03 GMC Sierra Reg Cab 1500 5.3L. I have already put edelbrock shorty headers on it and exhaust not really it's straights w/ converters (is this bad in the long run straight exhaust even having the factory converters on it just no muffler.) back to the point i just ordered an AEM brute force intake kit with the dryflow filter and was wondering if it is trash or good quality. thanks again

I have the AEM Brute Force Intake kit with the Wet Filter, Bought it used, when it comes time to replacing the filter I'm going to change to the dry filter. I notice a 2 MPG gain in Fuel economy, better throttle response, and louder when you put your foot in it. AEM and K&N Are comparable I'm told. Volant makes a nice sealed unit if your into 4x4 'ing.

I have the AEM system with the wet filter. I really like it. Better response and a little better MPG, if I can keep my foot out of it.

Quality construction and fit and finish.

You could debate this topic for years but the bottom line is if you get better airflow you will be letting in more dirt. I would suggest whatever you use, do some oil annalysis after you begin using it. You may be disapointed with the silicone levels that you will find. Higher silicone levels mean more dirt and sand getting in.

I personally just ordered a True Flow set up with their foam filter. They do not claim flow as good as cotton/gauze but it is better than paper. They also claim better filtration than paper.

I will run it for a couple of oil changes and if the oil ann is not favorable, I will switch back to Paper and keep the Intake tube.

It is a little expensive but I am in the distribution end of the Auto Parts Business and was able to order it through one of our stores at cost.

Yes, you keep the original air box. This is the only way I would have it because I wanted a true cold air sytstem and my wife, who is the primary driver of our Yukon XL would not tolerate the extra noise associated with an open element. Also True Flow makes bold claims that the factory air box will flow far more air that a 5.3 can use. The restriction is in the tube.

As I said, I have researched this for far too long and finally settled on this unit. Not to put down on others but I just could not sacrifice filtration for flow which is what a cotton gauze filter does.

I guess this is why they make choc and vanilla.

Check them out on their website.

What do you think is the highest performing aftermarket intake kit?

This is a highly debated subject on almost every forum I belong to: Does an aftermarket CAI make any difference?

I've read hundreds of threads and posts and if you sort out the SOP dyno reuslts to actual dyno results the answer is no, a CAI will do no more for your vehicle by itself than a drop in filter.

Now couple a CAI, with an exhaust and a custom tune? Now you have synergy working together and you will/should see better performance and maybe a slight increase in MPG again this depends on your vehicle.

Just installed my new True Flow CAI system this weekend and the quality and appearance is more than I expected. No intake sound increase at normal speed and a nice smooth roar at full throttle, I call it "intake music". I cannot comment on MPG yet but I can tell you I can feel the difference beginning around 3,000 RPMs all the way up.

Very nice system, great customer service and at this point I would highly recommend it.
