2006 Silverado Radio Died

I bought a new 2006 Silverado about a week ago, and went to install a CB in it. I was planning on running the power from the radio harness. I used a multimeter to check the voltage on two of the lines in the radio harness (The orange and red ones that aren't next to any others).

After checking the lines with my multimeter, the radio now only works intermittently. It will come on just fine some times, other times it will stay in the off position, like the t ruck is turned off. When it's in the off position, I can press the "Recall" button, and it will display the time. Some times the radio will come on after a few minutes, other times it doesn't come on at all. Also, when that started happening, my cigarette lighter quit working. The accesory plug right next to it still works though. The only thing I did was check the voltage of those two lines...

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. :sigh:

Did you disconnect the harness from the radio when you checked for voltage? Sounds like you shorted something to ground. BTW, the safest way to install an accessory, such as CB radio, is to use a dedicated wire harness connected directly to the battery with an inline fuse. Or find an empty accessory circuit in your fuse block. That way you cannot damage anything (unless you switch the terminals by mistake of course). CBs have substantial curent draw, so splicing into a radio power wire would not be a good idea in the fist place.

Yeah, I had totally disconnected the harness. I wanted the CB to turn on and off with the truck, which is why I had tried to splice it to the radio's harness instead of going directly to the battery.

If I did short something, what would be the most likely thing damaged? Any idea how to check (And fix) it? I'm thinking that is probably what happened, I used one probe of the multimeter on the wire, and another on a grounded screw. If it was shorted though, would it still be working intermittintly?

Of course after doing that, I read somewhere that there isn't a switched power supply to the radio, and the data bus controls when the radio comes on. :sigh:

Thanks

This is true. It's how they do the key off, radio stays on until you open the door thing. The radio has full power all the time and the body control module sends a message over class 2 to the radio to tell it to turn on or off.

I'd be willing to bet you didn't get it all the way plugged back in.

I had some more of a chance to look at it last night, turns out to be two seperate problems. As far as the lighter goes, the fuse blew on it. With the radio turning off and on, the pin in the wiring harness seems to be loose. If I pull the radio out of the dash, it usually comes on, and then turns back off when I put it back in the dash. I was able to get the radio to stay on last night though when I put it back in. It turned off on my way to work this morning when I hit a bump though, so I'm pretty sure it's a loose pin.

I think it is the data pin that is loose, the radio still has power (I can get the time by pressing the recall button). I'm going to try to tighten the pin up tonight, and will hopefully fix it for good :sigh:
