Transmission Fluid... where did it go???

I'm back with another issue on my truck.

A couple weeks back I felt what I thought was the transmission slip just a bit. So, I followed the instructions on how to check the level and it was low.

I placed a quart in, (Checking every 3 or 4 oz), let the truck set, followed the instructions again and then rechecked the fluid, it was not even hitting the stick. It took just short of two quarts.

There are no visible leaks, no burning smell while driving, where the fluid may be leaking onto a hot pipe or something along those lines.

The tranny takes much longer to hit overdrive and it just does not seem to have the pulling power up hills like it did prior.

Any ideas on where the fluid went????? Or where it is going????

Thanks

Is this a 4x4 vehicle?

Sometimes transmission fluid makes its way through the seal between the transmission and transfer case and ends up in the transfer case...as for over two quarts worth, I doubt it.

Are you checking fluid level with the engine running and in park? Hot or cold?

Also be careful reading the dipstick because new transmission fluid sometimes doesn't show up very well on the stick.

The sluggish performance you speak of can be either low fluid or signs of an overfilled tranny...both of which are not good.

Almost sounds like a problem I had with mine a couple weeks ago. Was acting up checked the fluid and it wasn't hitting the stick. Filled it up but the transmission was still acting up.

Took it to the dealership and the transmission had to be replaced under a TSB about water getting into the transmission.

Definitely take it to the dealer and let them figure out what is going on.

Have a nice day.

Firstly, thanks for bringing this issue up. I had noticed in the morning that my tranny was taking an extra few seconds to shift. After reading this post I decided to check fluid.....wouldnt you know...low, just barely touching stick. I had it in to dealership 800km ago for oil change. Anyway, took it there this morning. They agreed low. They looked for leaks and have put a dye into the fluid and told me to return at the end of the week. This will be interesting indeed. They mentioned they have had trouble with leaks between tranny and transfer case. I will keep ya all posted on this one.

Hey everyone, This truck is the one which had the transfercase replaced due to a vibration, (and a bunch of other issues that were addressed under the lemon law) so maybe that is where it is going. I had noticed the truck in 4wd just did not seem right. It seems like it is being held back. (like a parking brake being engaged)

In any case it will go into the shop.

As for checking the fluid, I check it based on the instructions in the owners manual.
