GM Transmission Fluid??

Recommended Posts

I have a mechanic who is pretty sharp and reliable. He has told me the GM automatic transmission is built to fail. He said their hydraulic fluid is unique to GM and has a compound that will eventually attack the friction points, leading to breakdown. He recommends highly that I have my tranny power flushed and replaced with standard ATF.

Am I being duped here to give him more business or has anyone else heard of this??

I read somewhere on the net about the newest trans fluid being adversely affected by oxidation. Apparently its fine as long as it leads a boring life, but if it gets oxidized, or water gets mixed with it, it's trouble. So I guess I have the same question as mojo has.

I agree with Valsport that you should be fine using any Dex III fluid. Seems like most would advise against a tranny power flush, especially on an older tranny. Heat is a big issue for transmissions, so you could consider reducing temperatures by using a finned aluminum pan if you are not into serious off-roading. Also, a firmer shift from a servo upgrade should improve transmission durability if you don't develop too much more of a lead foot from changing it. :chevy:

Ok- I screwed up- He said it is the Coolant- Dex Cool or whatever it is from the factory. He said to get it out and flush the system. The stuff is a time bomb, attacking the pump seals and gaskets, etc.

Anyone heard of this?

On another note, 6.0 liter w/63k miles, I had a exhaust manifold leak- turned out to be a bolt or stud surrendered. Also the stainless cross over exhaust pipe that goes into the cat clean busted. Time to break out the check book
