Can I make one out of aluminum or something and a K&N filter?

You can make one like this

all you need is a 90degree elbow

a straight plastic piece and a 45 degree elbow atach to filter and you will most likely have one looking close to this and i think you can find this at most places like home depot.

Although you did a nice job on your home made kit I have always questioned the purpose of a CAI.

 

Technically isn't that a HAI? As with all so called CAI's they pull hot underhood air. They are not sealed from underhood temps.

 

At least the stock airbox is shielded from the underhood heat.

 

Has anyone actually noticed a difference with a CAI kit? I know they make the intake noise go up significantly.

Well the special hoods help... without that - you are in fact pulling hotter air. The cowl hoods pull in the air...
