My '05 Denali is fast approaching 40,000 miles, so I'll be changing all fluids soon. I'm an experienced DIY'er, so it's no biggie. My question is, can you possibly drain all the trans fluid, including the torque converter? My Fords had a plug in the TC, are GMs the same?

 

I'm not interested in a flush, so no need to mention that option. Just looking for a way to completely drain the old trans fluid.

Pulling the pan gets about 5 quarts. There is not a plug on the converter. To get all the fluid you can either flush it or pull it out and hang it on the bench.

I got 50,000 miles on mine. 20 of it towing 6000lbs. I changed the filter, everything was fine. the linkage is a bitch, so it must be done on a lift.

Two things: I would suggest a switch to a premium syn such as Amsoil and their website offers detailed instructions on how to get all of the old fluid out. The cliffnotes version is:

 

Drop the pan, change the filter and fluid as you normally would. Put it back up and refill. You will then need a second person. Remove a trans cooler line at the front of the truck. Mine had a rubber hose so it was no big deal plus I was also replacing my OE trans cooler with a real cooler at the same time. Uisng a clear glass jar, have the person start the truck for a few seconds until one qt of fluid pumps out. Add another qt to the trans through the dipstick tube. Pump out another qt and so on. You wil need to do this about 10 times to get all the old fluid out. You will begin to noice the fluid will begin to look cleaner and cleaner after the 7th or 8th time.

 

Flush machines are ok but you still have to drop the pan and change the filter. You cannot flush a filter.
