350 V8 - Too much fan noise!

Hey,

 

i just bought a 97 chev silverado with the 350 v8. why does this truck have such a loud fan noise when you step on the gas and the rpms get up? above 2500 rpm all you hear is the fan and air noise. coming from under the hood.

 

are all 350's on these trucks like that? is there anything i can do to get rid of this cooling fan noise? thanks!

If your fan clutch is seized, you will have that problem. It really shouldn't be noisy.

when the truck is cold and i start it, should the fan be running full blast? the fan runs at all times on this truck, cold or hot.

The fan should turn much slower when cold as it is not really needed at that point for cooling.......the hotter then engine gets, the faster is should turn. Try freewheeling the fan when cold, then when hot (engine off of course)......it should spin pretty easily when cold, little more resistance when hot.

Sorry, I should have said turn instead of spin.......is your fan litterally just hard to move??? If so then yes its the clutch. Don't know about pricing.

I had one of those clutches seize on me once. UNBELIEVABLE noise. You can always turn them, if you can't turn it at all, it is seized and needs replaced.

i can turn it but i have to use considerable force. when you buy a new one, can you choose difference levels of stiffness? it never really gets that hot here, and there is no need for the fan to be cranking full blast at all times.

Just replace it with the one for your vehicle. When it is cold out, you can almost count the revolutions the fan is spinning. As the engine warms up, the clutch engages more thus spinning faster. Does not matter how cold of an area you live in, the fan still needs to operate properly to keep the engine cool.

I noticed my fan clutch was a little loose. Replaced it with $ 40.00 job from parts store. Experienced the noise problem same as you are. Replaced with $ 160.00 job from GM. Quiet as ever. Pay up or buy ear plugs. 1996 Silverado 5.7L.
