Clunk when turning

Recommended Posts

Noticed when easing into my carport, turning the wheel all the way to the left or right will give off a clunk.

Doesn't happen when driving down the road (that I noticed), just when completly stopped and turning the wheel.  Any ideas?

I know there was a TSb for the intermediate steering shaft on some earlier (new body style) trucks.  I'm not sure if this would be the fix for your clunk or not...

Had an unusual noise while turning from lock to lock or close to it while backing up.  Dealer ended up replacing the steering gearbox.

We had our truck serviced on Friday along with five current

TSB's. The "clunk noise under hood" is covered by this TSB:

00-02-35-003A, in which they lubricate the intermediate

steering shaft assembly. Seems as if they are making up a lot of freeplay by stuffing the shaft with grease, but it works.

Our truck is quiet as quiet as a church mouse; really tightens her up too. Here's the GM Part # for the kit used: P/N 26098419. The kit comes with a detailed instruction sheet with diagrams showing you exactly what to do. GM allows

.4 hr for the deal, so it should be fairly easy.

Funny, I just sent one of these kits to the Carribean for a guy. Best of luck with it.
