About to buy a 2001 HD with the 8.1

I am just about to buy a 2001 Chevrolet 2500HD 4x4 with the 8.1L from a local dealer and i was just curious about the gas mileage and reliability of this engine. The thought of having an actual big block seems pretty cool with the few that are still around. I test drove it today and the power of it was amazing. It seemed to run at real low rpms and I was just curious exactly what the mileage was but the dealers usually don't tell you the exact mileage so instead of asking them I wanted to leave a post on here.

Thanks in advance

If it's stock you'll get about 10-11 around town and as high as 16 on the highway depending on how fast you drive. Bigger tires and other mods will change that. Towing will vary depending on what you pull. I usually get about 7-8 towing.

You don't buy a big block and worry about gas mileage. Just get it, you'll love it!

What he said!! :)

Amen!

I've installed Volant and Westers and am getting ~10-11 MPG city and 12-14 highway. Mine is CC/SB/Allison with 285 Revo's and 3.73 gears.

yeah thanks i am actually pretty pumped to get it......going from a 4.3 6 banger to that 8.1 so you can imagine. That 4.3 wasnt anythign great either i doubt if i ever got 300miles on a 32 gallon tank.

You'll love the power and make friends with he guys at BP and Shell. Also, it does run in the low rpm range from idle to highway, that is normal.

p.s. I'd sell my soul for even just 11-12 mpg.

The only common problem with that engine will be the crank sensor. You'll have to replace it soon if it hasn't been done already. I got mine with 52K on it and did a tune up soon thereafter. It's been running like a top ever since. I do mostly city driving and get 10.0, on the highway I'll run fast but still manage 11. You never get over the power, it feels as good as it ever did when I have to go.

Besides fuel, the only other complaint that I heard was oil consumption. Something to keep an eye on. My 8.1s really didn't use to much.

My 70K mile, 2K1, 8.1, CC, SB gets 12-13 avg hiway and 10-11 in town. significantly less towing a 28' enclosed trailer loaded with 9000lbs of race car and associated gear.

It also gets about 1 qt of oil for every 1500 miles.
