6.2 liter diesel

Is it true that the 6.2 liter diesel wasn't a good motor and that it broke alot? I heard that they were a junky motor and that they were not good at all. Let me know what you all think.

Are you talking about the GM 6.5L diesel that was in the trucks before the duramax? I don't remember a 6.2L but that may be before my time.

edit: With just enough knowledge to misquote, or in my case, not enough knowledge to provide any helpful information :)

If you are talking about the 6.5L...my dad has had one (now I drive it) with over 130,000 miles and no major trouble yet. They were known to have some issues, but all engines do. The powerstroke is known to be the stronger diesel for those time frame trucks. I would say that it isnt nearly as strong as a DMax, but it all depends on what you need it for. With new technology come better and more capable engines, but that doesnt mean old engines are junk.

Never had a trailer I couldnt tow with the 6.5L, get great gas mileage with 4.10s and a 5 speed manual (have gotten over 20 mpg on the intersate with no trailer and average around 16-17 in heavy traffic driving), never had a major problem and buying one nowadays would be alot cheaper than any DMax. Maybe my Dad just got lucky when he picked this one up off the lot new in 97, but that is my experience.

edit: Well, tflessner just proved that I know nothing, so sorry for wasting yalls time. But i still give my support to the 6.5L, may not be the best, but it can be a hard working truck.

The 6.2L diesel wasn't very durable, and definitely wouldn't hold up very long after being turboed. Of course I know a guy that has almost 200,000 miles on his old '84 pickup with the 6.2, but he doesn't do any towing with it.

We had an '86 3/4 ton with a 6.2 that my dad put a Banks turbo on. It lasted about 10,000 miles before it fell apart. He put a new 6.5L diesel block in that was built for a turbo and it was still running good (80,000 miles later) when he traded it in. He towed his boat everywhere up in the mountains, to Lake Powell, etc. (about 7,000lbs) and it worked great.

The 6.5's still couldn't compete well with the Cummins and Powerstrokes, which is why they partnered with Isuzu and came out with the Duramax, an awesome engine!!

This 6.2 is in my mason dump. I hope it'll hold up I am not going to be really loading it. I would haul like a cord of wood or mulch, that's about it. But if it goes I'll just put a 454 in in it or something I wont have the money to put another diesel in it. Suposedly the motor in my truck only has 30,000 on it so it should last a while.
