intake manifold

I'm glad to have found this forum. Hope I can be an asset.

I removed the intake manifold from my 2000 5.0 Savanah van with 72k miles, to change the intake manifold gaskets. When I separated the top manifold from the bottom one, I found the inside of the top manifold coated with oily grit. Is this condition normal, or if it's not, what could be the cause of the grit? I service the air filter according to the manual.

Since the injectors just snap in and don't make a tight seal, is it possible for exhaust from the cylinders to leak past them into the upper manifold?

Thanks

Both the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) and the PCV valve cause this crud. My 99 with a 350 is the same way. Never seen a problem with leaking past the spider injectors.

Thanks for the reply. That makes me feel better (mysery loves company). It's just wierd that the air is carefully filtered into this plenum that's so nasty inside.

That is why the controversy over air filters and the micron size they filter down to is so irrelevant. The combustion process produces abrasive carbon particles and other byproducts then the exhaust gas is funneled directly back into the intake by the EGR valve. Then the PCV valve takes all the combustion gas that got by the rings and sends that back into the system to burn again too!
