2001 Suburban steering problem

I have a 2001 Chevy Suburban with 60,000 miles on it. I bought the truck several months ago(it had 52,000miles at that time) and noticed a slight "clunking" sound when turning the steering wheel. Over the past few months, I noticed this sound is becoming more prominent. It kind sounds like the clunking a CV axle on a car does when its going bad. Is there some joint in the steering shaft that could be making this noise? If so, is it common for it to go out after only 50,000 miles?

More than likely the steering intermediate shaft, it is a WELL documented problem, and it is common for it to do that so soon, the "current" fix is to disassemble the shaft and apply a heavy grease to it and put it back together. It will eventually come back. Look in the tech section for the complete "how-to".
