Wireless router

About to jump to the world of wireless router. What do I need to look for? Which one is better than the other? We have a 2.4 ghz phone, does that make a difference? Wife wants to search the net on her new Gateway laptop from the living room, it has wireless built in.

Thanks. :banghead:

Your phone won't be a problem, go for a linksys or a dlink router as they are the better names. Your ideally looking for an 802.11 g router with backward compatibility with 802.11 a/b ( depending on what her laptop is compatible

802.11g is good for 54mb per second ( there number anyways). I have set a few up and they work really well. I would be sure to use there advanced security features like wep. A really good website to check your internet security is www.grc.com ( he is the foremost leader in security)

Enjoy and I envy you

I have always been happy with Linksys. They are the consumer company of Cisco which is what the majority of the internet is run off of.

Linksys has the Wireless-G router, the Wireless G w/Speedbooster. If you ever plans on transfering large files between computers, get the Speedbooster router, if not the regular Wireless G will do just fine.

Linksys has also been the easiest one to set up in my experience.

I agree - Linksys all the way! USR used to be good, but since they got bought out by Cisco, it's all good now.

I had lots of trouble with linksys, got the 40 dollar trend net on tigerdirect, easiest setup, outstanding performance!!!!!!

I bought one of those only to use the USB access point. Had to take it back two months later for an exchange. It kept hanging on me.

did you return the linksys or trendnet? My trendnet was compared to 2 other models over $100. I would just research all you can and make a decision off that! Good luck!

I returned the trendnet access point. It was used with my Linksys. After the exchange, all is good again. It was bought at FutureShop.

For the basic home ueser, any Linksys, Belkin or D-Link are perfectly fine. You don't need the latest and greatest version, just be sure to use WEP encryption and maybe even MAC Address lockdown as well

A few years ago, the best deals were still through Amazon belive it or not, not sure about today though.

I did get an $80 Belkin wireless router at Best Buy for $10 after rebates in early 2005, that was sweet :happysad:

Save some $$ and be secure at the same time :D

Yea I think a router is pretty much like any other one, depending on version. Just wish I could get mine to allow me to transfer data. I think it might have ssomething to do with my router actually carring the IP and my compuer recieving a default number from the router. Not sure how to get around that?

Thanks for all the help. Makes it easier on what to purchase with knowledge of known user facts and not just guess work.

I'm using a Netgear Rangemax at home. I've been more than happy with it's performance and outstanding range of connectivity.

By far, the best and most reliable wireless router I've ever used is the Linksys WRT54G. The stock software on it is pretty bulletproof, and I've never had one that has gone bad under normal everyday use (I have screwed a few up, but, mainly because of my own stupidity like using alternate firmware and cranking up the power to the point to where it fries itself).

Do take care with your 2.4GHz phones, though. Your phones will cause interferance. I can't tell you how many times my ex-wife would pick up the phone and call her sister, and my laptop would be dead till she hung up the phone. If you want 2.4GHz internet, buy a 5.8GHz phone.

BTW, there is a new version of the Linksys WRT54G; version 5.0 and up. DO NOT BUY VERSION 5.0 OR HIGHER. Everyone that I know who's had one has the same problems; they're slow, lock down all the time, and are just pure junk.
