Torsion Bar Adjustment

Recommended Posts

My dad just bought a new 2002 GMC Z71 and doesn't like how it sits on the road.  He wants the front to be more even to the back end of the truck.  I have an old body style and mine sits pretty much level from front to back.  Is it a torsion bar adjustment to get the truck level.  If so, where can this be done.

Cranking the T bars would fix the problem and its a pretty easy job, but it MUST be aligned after they are adjusted! You should be able to do a search and find out some info, I would think someone has already posted a detailed set of instructions (just turning some bolts)!

Yup, just turn the bolts.

They are located on the Tbar crossmember about the middle of the truck.

Helps if you bring the front wheels off the ground first.

Make sure you measure your height before you do anything, and remember how many turns you add to each bolt in case you want to bring it back down to factory height/specs.

The drivers side bolts will have less thread left, so start with that one, and then match the other side with the height on the drivers side.

Then get an alignment.

You may be ablt to get up to 1 3/4", possibly 2" of height.

If you want more, get a set of the Ford Torsion Bar Keys.

PS-this may stiffen your ride.

Peace.

Here's an answer written by Willie Worthy in Four Wheeler Magazine's Techline.

You can gain some additional height by adjusting your trucks torsion bars, but remember, any time you get more downward wheel travel by either using a stronger torsion bar or putting more tension on the bar, you're reducing the amount of wheel travel available in the other direction. This makes for not only a stiffer ride but the reduced travel can hinder off-road performance by holding the tire in the air.  If the tire isn't on the ground, it doesn't grip very well.

Does anyone have a guide for how many turns you can get away with before you have to have it re-aligned?  I'm just wondering.

I got a question, I'm going this weekend to get tires put on. Right now I have 245s but I want 265s. How many inches in height would those ad? And should I get the torsion bar turned?
