mmmikkke Posted May 20, 2006 Posted May 20, 2006 Crash Video Security cameras in Russia's recently completed Lefortovo Tunnel captured some pretty wild high speed car accidents. The 3.2km tunnel appears rather cramped, but that doesn't stop any of these drivers from travelling at rediculous speeds... edit: sorry about the 31.5 km in the byline, my initial source had given it as the length, but Google cleared that up: it's only 3.2 km.

Maybe they have a wee bit of vodka before driving the tunnel.
Rammer Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 I know I wouldn't get out of my car in there. It's much safer getting hit in the car.
vinniej Posted May 24, 2006 Posted May 24, 2006 What did they pave that tunnel with, Ice? Crazy Russians!
mmmikkke Posted May 24, 2006 Author Posted May 24, 2006 Normally the heat in the earth keeps the tunnel from freezing even in winter. There are some small leaks in the tunnel lining where ground water drips onto the road surface, and this winter, it got so cold that even in the tunnel, underground, the dripping water turned to black ice. So these drivers were encountering black ice, apparently. I'd like to know where that 2nd cube van came from, almost looks like it came out of a tunnel that intersects from the side!

mmmikkke Posted May 24, 2006 Author Posted May 24, 2006 If it *did* come from the side, are those metal gates hydraulically activated? Like gate-up means stop, and gate-down means go? So maybe the intersecting tunnel was icy also and the other van blew the stop gate?
Wingnut Posted May 25, 2006 Posted May 25, 2006 I think what's more likely, is that it's a bad camera angle, and it just looks like there's less room than there is...And that other truck was in that lane already.
