Replacement engine.

Recommended Posts

I drive a 2001 Silverado 4.8 Z71 with 106000 miles on it. The truck drives well but I am contemplating replacing the engine with a remanufactured 5.7 (my mechanic said the it will fit right on the gearbox and that it only required a re-programming of the computer). Any thoughts? Someone told me there might be a space issue as I would need a new fan/fan cover??? What do you guys think?

You need a 5.3 not a 5.7 two different engines. The 5.3 will fit right in and just need the PCM programmed. The 5.7 would need a lot of modifications not worth it.

Different bolt pattern on bellhousing too.

If you really need more power, you could also go with a 6.0. There are several threads on swaps like this.

This would be a fairly easy swap too as block is the same and the 6.0 has a lot more low RPM torque than even the 5.3.
