Clay Bar

I have a friend that says Mcguires (sp?) has a product called clay bar. He lives by the stuff, it really makes his truck smooth. Has anyone used this? Any comments good or bad?

I used to detail at a local dealership and trust me the clay is awsome!! It will take dirt out of the paint and light overspray! It really works good! You do have to be careful on darker colors, you can scratch the paint if your not careful.

I was given the tip of putting a plastic drop cloth down while you use it.  That way if you drop the bar it won't get contaminated with grit.  If it gets sand / grit in it, it becomes useless and will scratch your paint.  I haven't done it yet, waiting for good weather and time.......

Oh yeah.  They work great.  I've done it a couple times, the last time being a little over a week ago.  The paint feels smooth as silk when done.  Like lauriet1 said, be careful and don't drop it and get sand/dirt on it.  I just pinched off goo sized pieces and used them in case I did drop it, that way I messed up less of it.

I used the Mothers Clay Bar.

I see Mothers has come out with a Clay Bar kit, It has the clay bar and a few other products in there too, for the whole clay bar experience I guess! Might be worth checking out!

I have used the Mother's Kit and give it good marks. It has everything you need for about two or three details and costs less than $15.00. It's not Zaino, but it works good. I have not used Zaino myself. The Mother's kit took only about 2 hours from start to finish for me. I will use it again.

I have this also but haven't had a chance yet.  Is the Cleaner Wax a wax or is does it just take the old wax off.   ??? I was just wanting to know if I had to go out and buy some wax or not.

If you have the kit, it has everything you need. Clay bar, quick detailer/pre clay bar spray, and wax with an applicator.

The Mother's Clay Bar is excellent.  It is great for removing some minor paint imperfections and contaminants that get into the paint so you have a smooth surface to wax on top of.  I would highly recommend it.  I would not recommend using the cleaner wax unless the paint has been neglected for quite a while (more than 6 months no wax not garaged, water spots, dull spots, etc).  Definitely would not use it on fresh paint.  The cleaner wax will have some abrasives in to remove what the clay bar doesn't take out.

I just detailed my truck yesterday.  Went over the whole thing with a Mothers Clay bar.  Took about 3 hours for me to do the truck.  I think it's worth it.  I'm going to dust it off today then go over it with the wax.

When I used the clay bar on my truck I had trouble with the clay sticking to the paint and almost never got it off.  Plus now I can see small scratches on the area where I used it.  Luckily I only did a small section.

What am I doing wrong?  I followed the instructions on the kit using the detail spray.  (I can't remember if it was mother's or meguire's, but it was one of those)

Sounds like you either did it in full sunlight or didn't use enough of the detailing spray to keep it wet.  In full sunlight it would dry the detailing spray quickly and cause the clay to dry to the paint surface.

I was in my garage but maybe I didn't use enough of the spray.  How much pressure are supposed to apply when using it?

I did mine this weekend and came out great. Use light pressure and plenty of spray. The bar will do the work. One thing put it in a ziplock bag when you are done with it. Mine stuck to the box.

I tried it... Mcguire's Clay Bar. The stuff works great. I'm going to use it on my wife's cavalier this weekend.

Highly recommend this product. Makes the truck as smooth as silk. Almost better than new.
