3500 just quits.

I have a 1997 Savanna Diesel Van. Model 3500. last fall the engine would just die anywhere and anytime. I took it in and had the fuel pump replaced, fuel filter replaced. It ran fine for about 4 months and now it is starting all over. The other day it just died as I was approaching a stop sign. I was unable to start the truck , it would turn over fine . I had it towed to a garage. The next day the truck started just fine. One thing I noticed when the unit stalled was that the glow plugs did not seem to kick in. Any help would be appreciated as I have sunk $4000 in and see no farther ahead.

Injector pumps drop like flies on these things. You said you had the "fuel pump" replaced but are you talking about the transfer pump or the injector pump.

Sorry I meant the injector pump. I also had the solenoid replaced . What is the transfer pump?

It is the lift pump on frame. It looks like a fuel filter with 2 wires. That is the next thing I would replace.

It wouldn't surprise me if it's the INJECTOR pump again. The newer ones we've been putting in are better than in the past, but they still have what I would call an abnormal failure rate.

I don't believe the transfer pump would be the problem here. Even not working, once the truck is running it'll stay running. Same with glow plugs.

You need to find a place that properly diagnose this thing. Were there any codes?

I agree that a malfunctioning transfer pump would not cause the vehicle to stall. I have one of those pumps in my Army diesel truck, and it is in the fuel tank and pressurizes the fuel to only about 5-7 psi. The diesel injection pump then pressurizes the fuel for each injector. The diesel pump injection pressure is about 3000 psi.
