Plugged injectors...again

Recommended Posts

I have owned 2000 / 3500 cutaway work van with an after market body on it for five years.

The for the first two years the injectors would plug up more often than the oil needed changing. GM gave me a 100,000 mile warranty for the problem and they were real good about constantly cleaning out the injectors. When I first purchased the van I never intended to get to know my service greeter that well. Every time the injectors plug it is an automatic lost day in the shop.

After two years they changed the injectors out stating that I was an extreme case.

Even with the new injectors and running injector cleaner the problem exists on about 1/3 the frequency. Now the 100,000 mile warranty ran out and it costs $85.00 to clean the injectors out.

I asked my service greeter yesterday if I should just assume my truck has leprosy and will never get better. He said that was a good non sugar coated way of putting it.

Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated.

do you buy gas at the same station/chain most of the time?

if so, time to switch vendors.

change fuel filter.

I agree and Techtron fuel system cleaner works really well for this. I have a friend that buys the cheapest diesel he can find and he has had injector and water issue twice now in less than 20K miles. Good quailty fuel is important be it gas or diesel.

I get the absolute BEST gas from Bush's Baked Beans.

Thanks for your replies.

On the Chevy Dealers orders I changed gas to nothing but Chevron. When that did not work they said nothing but ARCO. They then said the gas in Riverside County California had the problem and that injectors in other states do not have this problem.

They said the fuel additives that make the fuel burn hotter are what make the injectors plug up. If that is the case will changing the fuel filter really help.

I have seen repeat injector clogs caused by the steel fuel lines coming apart on the inside. They flake and rust and clog the injectors. I have been told that fuel additives cause this in conjunction with the metal composition of the lines. The only way I have fixed the very few cases is with new fuel lines. By chance, is this an R motor (350)?

I know they called it the 350 vortex / vortec? How do I find out if it is an R motor.

Look at your VIN, I believe it is the eighth character. If there is an R then there ya go.

You've probably got that god-forsaken CMPFI that I had on my '99 Jimmy. It's the WORST possible system GM could have designed. What's happening is your poppet nozzles are getting clogged and making it run like s**t. There's a recall that's ONLY available in California for all 4.3/5.0/5.7's with this system, and I believe it's supposed to be good for 200,000 miles. At least that's what I found out online/bitching at the GM customer service line. The only reason there's a recall in California is because of their clean-air laws, and that system clogging doesn't allow the vehicle to meet them. It's got nothing to do with the gasoline and EVERYTHING to do with the injection system.

The dealer here says he will no longer help me on this problem.

Do a search online for it. I believe it's www.alldata.com, you can at least find what the TSB is, but you can't read it unless you pay.
