BRAKE PROBLEMS ON A 98 YUKON

Recommended Posts

Hi!

I own a 98 GMC Yukon that has only gave me problems. In particular the brakes. I've had to replace the calipers, master cylinder, booster and hoses within a period of three years. Braking now requires much effort and they feel dry as if their is insufficient vacuum. In addition, my steering has shimmy(vibrates). Any thoughts?

Sounds as if someone was headed completely off track for a fix to your brake problems; e.g. The Shotgun approach.

Sitting on a pickup truck platform, I am quite familiar with these brake systems. The problem: Insufficient bias to the rear brakes, which keeps you riding on the front brakes constantly. GM is alleged to have an updated brake bias

available but sources are henky at this point. The 'shimmy'

in the steering wheel as you apply the brakes is your front brake rotors pulsating since they are no longer true. These rotors are quite thick and can be machined if within limits.

The key to brake success and longevity in the meantime is to have the rear brakes cleaned and adjusted, and use your parking brake religously. This will keep the shoes close to the drums and reduce the front brake effort. Backing up and applying the brake does not do this, the parking brake actuates the slack adjuster which clicks the self-adjuster against the trailing shoe in order to keep it close to the rear brake drum. This will decrease your brake pedal effort and you will have a nice high firm pedal.

Have a great one!

i'm new to this so forgive me if i break any rules.

I've come across this web page.

http://server3003.freeyellow.com/rpierce/BrakePaper.htm

It explains problems i'm having with my 87 1/2 ton chevy.

It's not cheap but may help your problem.

Quickly, the page discusses gm's insufficient vacuum booster design in it's trucks.

And comparisons with it's more powerful Hydra-Boost unit.

Try the brakes, if you can, in a friends yukon.

They may have inadequate braking as well.

good luck

mike
