What does the 1500 REALLY mean?

1500

2500

3500

What is the difference?

Thanks in advance guys/gals!

1500 = half ton

2500 = 3/4 ton

3500 = 1 ton

Just new names for older "acronyms". All are considered "light duty" trucks with the 1500 being the lightest, the 2500 and 2500 HD being in the middle and the 3500 being the heaviest. As the number gets higher, the truck has a higher payload and towing ratings and the 2500HD and 3500 trucks have different frames and engine options, as well as stronger axles to handle the extra weight capacity.

Ok. I get that part... thanx. By half ton what do they mean... because it don't weigh half ton and it can haul more than half ton. Maybe I'm just thinking too deep in it.

Any clue?

It's an arbitrary designation - it does not correlate with the truck's payload rating well. On some older trucks that may have been the case, but not on modern trucks.
