Oil Consumption - Normal or not

Ok, 90 percent of my driving is 7 miles round trip to work, then 3 miles round trip to the gym. I'm burning a quart of oil every oil change (normally 4,000 - 5,000 miles). What I've noticed:

 

- have piston slap (acknowledged by dealer in writing, but no action will

ever be taken)

- with mobil 1 5w30 if you pass on the highway, you smell it

- with mobil 1 15w50 if you pass on the highway, you don't smell it

- Oil analysis at 24,000 miles said engine was fine (no abnormal wearing etc)

- Recently took a 750mile round drip with about 3,500 miles on the oil and didn't

burn a drop (70mph-75mph through mountains of west virginia)

- Have noticed that the oil is over the full line on the dip stick when newly changed

and burns down to almost full then doesn't seem to move.

 

Is this consumption normal? Don't get me wrong, I'm not going to the dealer or anything for it, but I am curious. Is it caused by the short mileage trips, the pistion slap?

Because of your very short trips it sounds normal to me. The reason you can smell oil burning is it's burning off some that has collected. I would suggest taking a Saturday drive around the city, Interstate preferred, get it up to temperature, and do a few wide open throttles, clean that build up out.

Yeah, your probably getting a lot of condensation in the engine with such short trips. As long as you get it good and hot every couple of weeks to evaporate off the condensate you should be fine. Winter will be worse than summer.

mercedes benz considers acceptable oil consumption of 1 qt per 1000 km. this is about 600 miles.

 

My 5.3 burns 1 qt per 5000 miles. I'm happy.

Have you recently changed your PCV valve? I am not expert on this but have read many post where someone changed the OE fixed orfice PCV valve to an old style PCV valve and they began having oil consumption issues.

 

I cannot be sure, but I think your 2004 came with a fixed orfice style. You may want to search this.

Its built in on the 2004 M/Y and its a fixed orfice.

I just want to make sure that with the short trips I don't do anything to hurt the engine. I have not checked the PCV valve, I'll do that soon. I recognize the need to get it out and get it good and warm. I need to make sure I start doing that.

Are you sure it is 1 quart per 600 miles? That is excessive by even the sloppiest of standards. I would think it would be acceptable on a model A Ford, but not a modern Mercedes.

For some reason lots of people have the idea that an engine burning oil for any reason is a way of complaining that the engine is defective but really ALL engines burn oil and if you are complaining about 1 qt for 4-5000 miles you are way off base. 1 qt for 1000 miles is still OK. An engine has to burn oil to lubricate the upper cylinder bore and valve guides.

I have owned many Chevrolets. I have never had to add oil between oil changes. The Fords I have owned though - all the time.

Facts are facts.

 

And while oil usage in the 1 quart per 1K seems alot really isn't. You would never see the smoke out the tailpipe.

Another thing that will determine oil consumption is how you drive the thing. I would kill to have a 7 mile commute every day (living in Houston, you can forget it). If you are flooring it at every light, the motor is going burn more oil.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
