2006 Silverado...which bug shield?

Recommended Posts

I've done a ton of searches an am still not sure which bug shield to get for my 1500. I read the 2006 come with the HD hood now and that you can just put 3M tape or glue the windshield stripping down. However, I'm wondering if there is a bug shield out there that won't need that.

Any advice/info/opinions are appreciated.

Vent Shade makes a short bug shield which is not nearly as tall as the GM accessory one. It costs aobut $ 35 from Auto Zone. I believe that one might work without causing much or any buffeting.

I have the factory bug shield on my '06 1500 and it works just fine. The kit came with the 3M tape but I have not had to install it.

My guess is that the bug shieled was made for the lower profile hoods and not the HD hood the bug shield which comes up just shy of the top of the HD hood so I believe that the air flow is not as pronounced as it would be

I also have a Lund low profile. I really like the way it directs the air over the hood of the truck. I bought it to replace an Auto Vent Shade. I didn't like the way it directed the air.

Is it a low profile one?

I was thinking either the GM or bugflector II and your replies helped confirm that. The bugflector II uses the same shield as for the 2005 HD, but the GM ones seem to list the same one for 2003-2006, which makes me wonder how well it works. But as rmreid said, it doesn't go all the way up.

I haven't looked at the Lund low profile, but you guys have 2000, so I wonder if it would affect the 06 differently?

Thanks for all of the replies, I appreciate the help. If anyone else has any thoughts on these, I'd like to hear them too. It'll be a little while before I get the bug shield as I just got a Line-X liner and ordered a tonneau cover, so the bank account needs to recoupe first.

My vote is none. I have 155K on my 2000 GMC and haven't had a bug shield for over 100K miles now. I haven't really had an issue with stone chips on my hood.

Compared to the wind noise, washer nozzle redirect and bad looks, I'd rather run it 'naked'

yes it is the low profile model. i think with the hood sticking up higher any bug shield should be good as the air is being deflected in a different way.....

Looking through the manual for the 02 I just got, under Ventilation Tips there's a bullet "The use of hood air deflectors may adversely affect the performance of the heating and air conditioning system".

Anyone have this problem? Was planning on adding one myself as co-worker has near identical truck.
