trans and rear questions (silverado)

So I'm at a loss. I've done a little Internet searching, but to no avail. I have a 2002 chevy silverado with the 4.8 . it's an auto (don't know if 5-speed was an option) and is a base model with no power. I'm trying to get some information on the trans that's in my truck. is this auto trans pretty reliable? how much power can it handle? also, what rear end gear is in my truck? and does the factory rear suck?

The Trans in a 4L60E.

For the rear gear, look for these codes on the sticker on the glove box door.

 

GU6= 3.42

GT4= 3.73

GT5= 4.10

 

If G80 is also listed, you have a locking rear axle.

The trans is stout with a 5.3, very stout with a 4.8. It is an outgrowth of the old turbo 350. 'nuff said.

I hope GM did a lot with the turbo 350 since the early eightys, when I was R&R man in a tranny shop. We did more th-350's in that shop the summer I worked there than all other tranny's combined. We used to recommend that the tranny be driven sanely and left alone--no oil changes or band adjustments unless absolutely necessary or if the unit saw hard service (trailering, plowing, etc.).
