When do I change my Brakes

Recommended Posts

I have a 1999 4x4 Silverado - how thin can you get the pads before you have to change them??

Do all Silverado breaks come with squeelers to let you know the brakes need changed?

Do you usually change brake fluid when you do the service.

I have 105,000 miles w/o a brake change if you can believe it.

If you pull your tire off, you can see the thickness of the pads and how much room is left until the "sqealer" tang will start hitting the rotor. I've read on these forums that the delaer brake pads are actually quite good (low dust, and long wear). I would bleed my brakes too as long as you're at it. When you do the rear brakes, take a look at the rear brake parking shoes too.

as a general rule of thumb, replace pads when the pad thickness is equal or less than the metal plate on the pad. this is pretty easy to eyeball.

Some of us wait for the squeaker noise but this is risky because the pads do not always wear evenly.
