Nav Unit for dvd viewing???

Recommended Posts

Hey all, Curious about being able to watch a dvd on the in dash Navigation Unit. Have heard rumors about this by bringing in a video signal from in roof stock dvd player. My truck is a 2005 Chevy Suburban Z-71.

If anyone can point me in the right direction I would be appreciative.

I know that there's a way to make it play the DVD's itself, without piping the signal in. The Nav disc is a DVD, so I know that it will read them...It's just a matter of some work.

I just can't remember where I saw the instructions.

Welcome to the boards, BTW

I've had this done in my 2004 Cadillac. It requires modification to the head unit so having it done will most likely void the headunit's factory warranty. It consists of inserting a circuit board that accepts RCA inputs from any external DVD source. The nice thing is that it accepts the stereo audio inputs as well as the video input so you don't need to use an FM modulator in order to hear your DVD source over the factory system. You do need to already have an existing Digital source connected such as XM radio or a CD player, otherwise an FM modulator becomes an additional component. To change the Nav/Radio screen into a monitor I just flip a switch mounted on my dash. I had it done by a shop and it cost about 1000.

From all I've read to date, you cannot modify the headunit to play DVD's from the Internal DVD Nav. slot. The input must come from an external player.

Not on the navs that come in the '03-'06 GM fullsize trucks/SUVs; believe me, if it were indeed possible, we'd know about it by now.

Your argument that "The Nav disc is a DVD, so I know that it will read them" is not a completely valid one. Just because the nav disc is a DVD doesn't absolutely mean that the nav unit can or should be able to read any and all types of DVDs; after all, there are different DVD formats--e.g., DVD-ROM, DVD-RAM, DVD-A, DVD Video. If you put AVI video files on a CD and stick the CD into your music CD player...does that mean said CD player should somehow be able to play those AVI files because it's on a CD and a CD player is supposed to play CDs? But I'll concede on one of your points--it is possible, but it definitely would take a matter of some work.

I reckon the nav unit firmware (and/or the optical reader itself?) doesn't have the code to read/decode DVD Video-formatted discs...hence why the nav unit does not recognize DVD movie discs.

I could have sworn that some guy posted a link to a thread on that diesel forum with instructions on doing it.

Maybe not.

Product Overview:

The GNET_RGB_X NavVideo module is our most popular product and it works with the majority of today's vehicles. This G-NET video module is the easiest way to interface a video source such as a DVD Player, TV Tuner, Reverse Backup Video Camera, iPod Video, Video Game Console, PC with composite output or other video source directly to your Chevrolet Suburban / Tahoe Touch Screen (2003-2006) OEM GPS Navigation LCD screen / LCD Display. The GNET_RGB_X features dual composite video inputs, one of which can be activated automatically when shifting the vehicle into reverse (usually used with a back-up camera), it also features complete control settings for brightness, color, tint and contrast, as well as a series of DIP switches that are configurable for each vehicle.

The GNET_RGB_X is an externally wired plug and play RGB converter interface that is installed inline of the GPS navigation computer in your vehicle and LCD screen; it works simply by interrupting the RGB video signal from your GPS navigation computer when you flip a toggle switch, activate 12V on the reverse camera line or use the optional remote. When this occurs the GPS navigation system video image will be replaced by the video input that is connected to the GNET_RGB_X module. The optional wired remote available for this unit will allow you to switch between the navigation image, and up to two video sources connected to the interface module, as well as change the brightness, color, tint and contrast.

The GNET_RGB_X is a video only input interface module, which means an FM modulator, FM transmitter or CD changer audio input interface adapter needs to be used to connect the audio signal from your external AV source to your audio system if your vehicle does not have an auxiliary input already available. Please view our "NavVideo Accessories" page to view the FM modulators that we offer. The GNET_RGB_X is video-in-motion enabled, so the video image will stay on the screen even with the car in motion!

Vehicle Specific Installation Information:

This kit includes the GNET_RGB_X module and a plug and play wiring harness with an 14pin flat ribbon cable that connects inside the radio. You can view a photo of the wiring harness provided by clicking on the "View Module Wiring Harness" button below.

Simply plug the vehicles OEM wiring harness into one end of the wiring harness provided with the GNET_RGB_X module, then plug the other end of the GNET_RGB_X harness into the location where the vehicles wiring harness was. Then connect 12V power, ground, remote antenna lead, and backup camera connector (if required). The installation is really that simple! Since the unit is plug and play and only requires extra wiring for 12V and ground, it will not void your vehicles factory warranty! Please read our product disclaimer to ensure the safe use of our NavVideo modules.

Please note that the RGB unit works with any NTSC video output device and with most PAL devices, some European PAL DVD players and PAL TV Tuners have been reported incompatible resulting in a vertical shift of the image. However, many European video devices give the option to output in NTSC mode, eliminating any potential problems.
