tailgate down: better mpg?

will leaving the tailgate down really give better mpg? i've tried it and i dont know if there's any significant difference if any. and hey...there are no stupid questions :crackup:

You actually get better mileage with the tailgate up. See: Mythbusters

 

Basically, with the tailgate up the air creates a "bubble" if you will in the bed which the passing air flows over, while when it is down it drags allong the bed.

This is only true of short-box trucks. Long box trucks, the tailgate works against you and lowering it actually can help. Since most trucks are short-box anymore (people buy trucks to ride around in, not use like trucks), they tested only a short-box truck on Mythbusters.

 

That being said, the difference is actually not very much (like .5mpg).

I'm an aerodynamics engineer. When I was in the U.S. Air Force

a few years back, I worked with folks from the Lockheed

low-speed wind tunnel. In the 1970s, aircraft production went

into a slump, and Lockheed started looking for other customers

for its wind-tunnel services. Prime candidates were the auto

makers, and Lockheed was successful in convincing Ford, among

others, that the wind tunnel would help them reduce drag and

wind noise on their vehicles. Needless to say, in the past

15-20 years, Lockheed has learned a lot about car and truck

aerodynamics. Anyway, they actually performed drag tests on

pickups with the tailgate both up and down, and found that

drag was actually LOWER with the tailgate CLOSED! This ran

counter to their intuition (and yours). The reason is that a

closed tailgate sets up a large "bubble" of stagnant air that

slowly circulates around the bed of the truck (we aero types

call this a "separated bubble"). When air approaches the truck,

it "sees" the bubble as part of the truck. So to the air, the

truck looks like it has a nice, flat covering over the bed,

and the air doesn't "slam" into the vertical tailgate. If

the tailgate is open, or replaced by one of those "air gate"

nets, however, that nice, separate bubble in the truck bed

does not form (it "bursts"). Then the air approaching the

truck "sees" a truck with a flat bed on the back of a tall

cab. This is a very nonaerodynamic shape with a very LARGE

drag. So, believe it or not, it's best for gas mileage to

keep the tailgate CLOSED. Hope this information is helpful.

They did do a "fluid" test too.

 

Now what about taneou(sp?) covers which claim to improve mileage?

I'd think those too would hinder mileage. Seems like the flat surface would "burst the bubble" as well. Definatly be interested to see some results.

I've seen four instances (me being one), where the truck hit a bump, the tailgate bounced up and came off the hinges. This is not a good thing.

If one of the wires that keeps the tailgate from going all the way down when open, comes off, the tailgate will fly around like crazy on the remaining wire.

This can become pretty interesting at freeway speeds!

I've also been advised by a Calif Hwy Patrolman that a tailgate in the down position, with nothing to keep it from bouncing up could be considered an unsafe load.

It also bears mentioning that the tailgate also serves as support for the bed, if you ride around too long with the tailgate down or removed, the sides of the bed will loosen and eventually start flappin in the breeze.

Keep the tailgate up. There are many reasons to keep it up and only one unproven reason to keep it down. Think of it this way. The auto makers have to keep the mpg as high as possible for the entire line of vehivle or else pay high penalties. If they thought they could get better gas mileage with the gate down, they would make a gate that allowed the wind to pass through. Having the gate down can ruin the gate, makes lots of noise, someone can drive into it at a light, looks stupid, and hurts mpg. This is a no brainer. Please don't be a complete redneck and use one of the nylon strap style gates.

    • My brother has an Escalade. The warranty has expired so he told his wife to go to the Valvoline quick lube he uses some times. They told her if her car was a 2020 and newer 6.2 engine they wouldn’t touch it. Hers is a 2019, so they did the oil change.
    • The oil filter has NOTHING To do with oil leak. GM sources parts from 1,000's of vendors and as with anything mass produced, flaws are unavoidable.    Putting a larger oil filter will do nothing but satisfy emotions. The OEM filter is designed for the engine and perfectly capable of handling the demands on the engine. Oversize oil filter could result in reduced flow and overall lower oil pressure.
    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling. 
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
