BG Induction Cleaning

Recommended Posts

Just had the BG induction cleaning done today. I might be crazy, but I think it actually made my 04 run smoother. It is a bit expensive, but I suppose keeping carbon at bay is worth it (though after 30,000 mi I did start using Techron on occasion). Also had some new rubber (Dayton Timberline HT) put on via the Hunter Roadforce GS 9700 balancing system. Quite a sight to see! It actually applies load to the tires when balancing them to determine where to put the tires on the vehicle (which position).

Is the Techron actually worth it? Does it actually do something? Im tired of seeing all these companies claim "how this product will save you from expensive repairs" and they dont hold up to their claims.

Techron actually is relabeled by GM and sold through dealers as "GM Fuel System Treatment" I think it does work, just do it every 3000 mi. I have a local mechanic who hosts a call in show every weekend here in D.C. (Pat Goss, also the tech guy on PBS's Motorweek). He claims that besides BG44k, Techron concentrate (make sure you get the big one for our trucks) is the only thing that he says is worth a d**n. If you ever want to listen to it, go to www.wjfk.com on the weekends (12 or 1 - 4) on Saturday and Sunday. It's quite enlightening.

Brian, Techron is the real thing. It is one of only a few cleaners that really work. Gumout has the same stuff packaged as well MMM as a few others. You will quickly notice it is about $9.00 vs $2.00 for some of the cheap ones. We sell it and I personally use it every 3K to 5K miles. I also use Chevron gas exclusively because of it.

Be careful not to get Chevron FI cleaner with Techron. They make a lesser exp cleaner also but it is not 100% Techron.

I'll third the Techron,As said before,we sell it at the dealership as "GM Fuel System Treatment Plus" It works!

I also either use Chevron or Shell gasolines because they meet GM's "Top-Tier" gasoline standards.

So 1 bottle is good for 3k miles? That doesnt sound too bad. I think I had a hard time finding it though last time I went looking for it to see what it was all about. Thought Wallyworld would carry it.

Walfart dosent carry it, try Autozone. I noticed the last bottle I bought claimed to be a new formula, I wonder what was wrong with the old formula????

Techron works. Period.

I try to buy the 100% concentration, it' smore expensive, but did I say 'it actually works'.

Ill have to check around. I dont know of any offhand. Napa and Auto Zone seem to be the biggies around here. Advance auto is another one. Maybe I will check some of those places.

The new formula helps keep the fuel level sending units clean from sulfur.

We've been seeing issues with the fuel level sending units getting ruined by corrosion caused by sulfur in the fuel.

Read this article that was in the Jan.'06 issue of GM-Techlink,

Beginning in October 2005, GMSPO is filling orders for GM Fuel System Treatment PLUS p/n 88861011 (88861012 in Canada).

The PLUS portion of GM Fuel System Treatment is the addition of a “filmer” additive that, when used regularly, can protect fuel sending units from the corrosive effects of sulfur contaminants found in some of today’s gasoline.

Sulfur contamination may disrupt electrical continuity of fuel sending units and lead to erratic or false fuel gauge readings. When used regularly, GM Fuel System Treatment PLUS provides protection against the effects of harmful sulfurs in gasoline.

One bottle of GM Fuel System Treatment PLUS added to the fuel tank at each oil change:

Cleans: Sulfur corrosion from fuel gauge sending units.

Prevents: Harmful sulfur components from attacking sensitive fuel system electronics.

Protects: By coating metallic surfaces of the fuel system.

Removes: Engine deposits left from use of poor quality fuels.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A new class of fuel called TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline, is appearing at retail stations of some fuel marketers. This gasoline meets detergency standards developed by four automotive companies. All vehicles will benefit from using TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline over gasoline containing the "Lowest Additive Concentration" set by the EPA. Those vehicles that have experienced deposit related concerns may especially benefit from use of TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline.

Gasoline Brands That Currently Meet TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline Standards

As of July 1 2006, all grades of the following gasoline brands meet the TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline Standards:

• Chevron

Chevron has markets in 29 states in the West, Southwest and South, as well as in Alaska and Hawaii.

ALL grades of Chevron with Techron gasoline meet TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline Standards.

• QuikTrip (not to be confused with Kwik Trip)

QuikTrip operates convenience stores and travel centers in a number of metropolitan areas:

- Tulsa, OK

- Springfield, MO

- Kansas City, MO and Kansas City, KS

- Wichita, KS

- Des Moines, IA

- Omaha, NE

- St. Louis, MO and St. Louis, IL

- Atlanta, GA

- Dallas-Ft. Worth, TX

- Phoenix, AZ

- Bartlesville, OK

- Miami, OK

- Vinita, OK

- Columbia, MO

• Conoco has over 4,000 stations located in 33 states.

• Phillips 66 has locations in 32 states across the nation.

• 76 has over 2,700 stations located throughout the country.

• Shell

Shell Oil Products has a network of nearly 7,000 branded gasoline stations in the Western United States. Shell Oil Company markets branded products through more than 10,000 stations in the Eastern and Southern United States.

• Entec Stations offer gasoline through stations located in the greater Montgomery, Alabama area.

• MFA Oil Company offers gasoline at "Break Time" convenience stores located throughout Missouri.

• Kwik Trip, Inc. offers gasoline at Kwik Trip convenience stores in Minnesota and Wisconsin and Kwik Star convenience stores in Iowa.

• The Somerset Refinery, Inc. offers gasoline at Somerset Oil stations in Kentucky.

What is TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline?

TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline is a new class of gasoline with enhanced detergency. It meets new, voluntary deposit control standards developed by four automotive companies that exceed the detergent requirements imposed by the EPA.

Where Can TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline Be Purchased?

The TOP TIER program began on May 3, 2004. Some fuel marketers have already joined and have introduced TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline. This is a voluntary program and not all fuel marketers will offer this product. Once fuel marketers make public announcements, they will appear on a list of brands that meet the TOP TIER standards.

Who developed TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline standards?

TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline standards were developed by four automotive companies: BMW, General Motors, Honda and Toyota.

Why was TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline developed?

TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline was developed to increase the level of detergent additive in gasoline. The EPA requires that all gasoline sold in the U.S. contain a detergent additive. However, the requirement is minimal and in many cases, is not sufficient to keep engines clean. In order to meet TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline standards, a higher level of detergent is needed than what is required by the EPA. Also, TOP TIER was developed to give fuel marketers the opportunity to differentiate their product.

Why did the four automotive companies join together to develop TOP TIER?

All four corporations recognized the benefits to both the vehicle and the consumer. Also, joining together emphasized that low detergency is an issue of concern to several automotive companies.

What are the benefits of TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline?

TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline will help keep engines cleaner than gasoline containing the "Lowest Additive Concentration" set by the EPA. Clean engines help provide optimal fuel economy and performance and reduced emissions. Also, use of TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline will help reduce deposit related concerns.

GM bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, NOT a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform these technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions, and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. Does 1 bottle of GM stuff = 1 bottle of Techron concentrate? Techron says to put it in every 3k, is this = to "each oil change"? Some people go 10k between oil change. I use Techron but wonder if every 3k is excessive.

I run it through every 3k just because it isn't that expensive. Every oil change seems like it would be alright though.

It has nothing to do with oil change intervals.

    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling.
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
