LB7: 2001-2004.5

300 HP, 520 ft-lb

LLY: 2004.5-2005

310 HP, 590 ft-lb

LLY: 2005-first quarter 06 MY

310 HP, 605 ft-lb

LBZ: second quarter 06 MY-current

360 HP, 650 ft-lb

Keep in mind that these numbers are with the Allison Transmission. (LB7: 2001-current with ZF-6 speed manual trans)

I would pass on the LLY even in favor of the LB7. I have heard more comlaints from LLY owners in regards to overheating issues and poor low end compared to LB7 and LBZ. The LLY seems to get the poorest mileage of the three as well and will probably go down as the bastard child of the various Duramax models. The overheating issues that plagued the LLY have been adressed on the LBZ. The six speed Ally on the LBZ is also a nice addtion. Unless your going to get a smokin deal on the 05 I would pass in favor of the 06.

I agree with DSengineer. My previous LB7 felt stronger than any LLY that I have driven, and also heard alot of complaints from people moving into an LLY from an LB7 that they felt weaker. No leveling kit. Just 1-1/2" torsion bar crank (I got away with it on my other truck without a hick-up as far as shocks). And yes, 285/75 R16's make a world of difference. According to this forum and the Diesel Page, you can trend the performance of the DMax over the years. The 02-03 LB7's seem be the most reliable years thus far. All though, I would not kick a DMax out of my garage, regardless of the model year, for any other diesel out there. Period. Great motors.

Thanks, I just wasn't sure how to tell what the 05's were rated at... the 590 or 605 ft-lbs... since there are two diffrent ratings for the LLY.

on all 2006 trucks the engines are all the same.....

2001-2004.5 LB7

2004-2005 LLY

No they are not all the same. First quarter, they were LLY's. The LBZ did not show up until Late October of 05. Infact, my boss just bought an 06 last month that has an LLY. He got 0% financing like me, but saved more money because it had the old motor. The build date on it was Sept 05. I also know a few others who ran out and bought 06's last August. LLY with 6 speed Allison. The way you can tell is the emblem on the door. The LBZ has the "Allison Transmission-Duramax" badge, and the 06's with the LLY have the previous badge ("Duramax-Diesel").
