I wanna say this is the idler pulley. I dont wanna go into autozone looking like a helmet head. I dont have AC, but i have this exact pulley. It squeaks really bad, and you can visually see it swaying back and forth...my guess is the bearings are bad.

So, ladies and gentleman....

Name...that...PART!

You are correct sir, it is called the idler pulley, though it may be called the A/C idler pulley in their computer. They do stupid s**t like this from time to time.

I'd call it an idler pulley too.

FYI, you can probably open the yellowpages, find a bearing store, and just replace the bearings in there for about $1.48 instead of spending what's probably going to be $50 on a whole new pulley.

My question is, do you think i need a bearing press to release/install the old/new bearings? Or can i just pop them out and tap them in?

I'd probably do it with a vise, a hammer, and a couple of sockets.

You could probably make do without the vice, especially if you have a strong set of c-clamps, or have a genetic mutation that enables you to do the VonErics "Iron Claw" on it.

That would be cool.

A great thanks to Wingnut for suggesting the bearing replacement. I drove down to Buffalo Bearing, got the "better" high speed electric motor bearing, installed it within an hour, and she runs like a million dollars.

Saved myself a chunk of change...cost me $5.22 with tax.

Thank you again!

They had a minimum $5 charge didn't they?

I hate that. The bearing shops AND the fastener (nuts-n-bolts) store around here both have that policy. If you buy a dozen $0.03 washers or two $0.79 bearings...It'll be $5.00 + tax. So you buy a bunch of extra crap that you think you might need in the future, and wind up spending $10 instead.

As for the idea...Well...That's why this forum exists :gmc:
