5.0/5.7 Difference

Is there any really noticeable gain in power and performance between the 96-99 5.0 and 5.7 Vortecs? I mean its common sense the 5.7 is bigger with more horses, but is it really THAT much?

I have a 5.7, and its pretty d**n quick for a truck. No replacement for displacement.

305's are crap motors. They used to put them in "Z-28" camaros and it was a joke of a car. They get VERY similar fuel mileage, but the 305 is a wheezy dog compared to a 5.3 or 5.7L motor. 5.7 has A LOT more power and torque.

I had a 305 in one of my Silverados and I'll never have another one. Lazy Dog! 5.3 or 5.7 will have that for lunch with leftovers.

Actually the 5.0s that were installed in older Z28s and the 5.0 Vortecs have about zero in common. 5.7 and 5.0 Vortec motors are very similar. A good buddy of mine is about 10k away from joining me in Chevy's 200k club with his 5.0.

 

The difference in horsepower is not enough to pass up a clean 5.0. Unless you tow a heavy load theres not any sense passing on a nice 5.0.

 

5.7 vortecs were rated about 255 hp and I believe 5.0s are about 220 or so. Torque should be pretty close too.

 

I'm a 4.3 V6 owner, and I've driven lots of other motors. The power of the larger motor is nice don't get me wrong. But its not worth it IMO if you don't pull a big boat or anything.

the 5.7/350 just has the myth and legend behind it. it's the status engine. the 305/5.0 is the big sedan engine the not the best camaro engine the little truck v8 engine. every thing the 350 isn't. usely come with econmy gears and stuff.

 

you'll get the same from the 4.8 and 5.3 guys

I have had a F**d with a 302 and one with a 351. I have had a boat with a GM 305 and when it went, I replaced it with a 350. If you really think there is not much difference in tourqe and power, you are kidding yourself. I had a hard time trying to find a replacement 305 for my boat because as the distributers put it "why would you want to put a motor with 30 less horsepower in it for the same price? That's why we don't stock the 305 anymore." Thinking about how a boat drivetrain works, you have no gears. You hit your best HP and Tourqe at over 2K RPM's. Which doesn't take to much time to achieve in a boat. You want to get on plane fast. My 305 was a dog. I had to have passengers go to the bow to get up on plane. Not so with the 350. It was instant. No matter where people were. Same goes for my truck. Only difference is there are no gear ratios in a boat. That's when you really notice a power difference. You put that 350 with 3.42's or 4.10's and you can get fooled about real power from your engine. Wouldn't swap my 350 for anything! You got to look at the HP to tourqe ratio and your gearing to get the real deal on what you personally need.

I've spent a lot of seat time in a 97 x-cab with a 5.0L and a 96 x-cab with a 5.7, I stand by my statement that the 5.0L is a dog of a motor.

 

Also, I test drove about 10 used trucks when looking for a silverado (I'm picky). I test drove just one with the 4.8L and wouldn't sit behind the seat of another. Like I said before, same fuel economy essentially (maybe a 1mpg difference) but in terms of power and towing the difference is night and day.
