Radio Button Lights

The 1,2,4,5 button lights have quit working in the original Delco radio. [ 2001 Silverado, 40,000 miles ] How difficult is it to replace them? I never had to replace any bulbs on my 1978 GMC [ 320,000 miles]!

Remove radio,, takes literally 30 seconds when you know how, disassemble radio front panel and you will find the circuit board withbulbs soldered on. Ebay sells repalcements and so does radio shack, replace all. You should do the heater panel too uses same bulbs,

 

You will need a small soldering iron and solder wick to unsolder old bulbs but it is not a real bad job.

Do I need a special tool to get the head unit out? Also, you wouldn't happen to know the bulb spec so that I can pick them up before diassembly would you? You're right. I think I'll replace them all AND the HVAC bulbs too.

Mine is an 00. Remove speedo trim panel by pulling straight out with shift lever in low. Radio will be held in by two heavy plastic snaps that are clear to see. release these and radio pulls straight out. disconnect wires and take radio to kitchen table and do the bulbectomy.

 

Soldering and unsoldering is toughest but not hard, after the first two bulbs you will be an expert. You do have to know how to solder. Use a small iron not a 500 watt gun.

 

In mine, no special tools required. Heater panel is also straightforward.

 

It is really nice when the panel lights up properly again.
