I've seen similar damage before. What took out the rear fender? Just the flapping rubber as the tire disintegrated? Or was there something else that bent the sheet metal between the wheel and the back bumper?

 

I assume flapping rubber / belts also took out the strut that anchors the sheetmetal in front of the tire...

I don't have pics of it, but my dad lost 3 tires in 3 days on his '94 dually when he was on a road trip w/his 11.5' truck camper. Front passenger tire (almost lost it, destroyed the inside of the fenderwell), passener outside dual (shattered the fiberglass fender), then what HAD been the driver's front but moved to passenger outside dual (pretty much finished off that fiberglass fender).

 

Call the tire company, tell them about it. If you didn't have a low tire and it just blew up, they'll want to see the tire to find out WHY it happened. If it shouldn't have gone, they may be willing to pay for repairs (Michelin/Uniroyal did this for my father).

All the damage was done by the tire and steel belts. I found a two foot long section in the middle of the road about one hundred yards back from where I finally got stopped. The truck nor trailer did any fish tailing or swerving. It sure was loud. Sounded like a cannon going off. I still have the tire. Was told by the highway patrolman to keep it. He said insurance companies tend to try and pin the tire failure on anything other than just a blowout. Depending on the determination of cause, it can effect which area of your policy the damage is claimed under. Anyone else have any experience with these tires? I checked their website, and didn't see any recalls that applied to my specific tires. I bought my truck used, and it had the tires on it. From what I can gather off the nomanclature on the tire, they were purchased in 2003. Looked to still have half their tread in tack. I had just rotated the tires a week before the trip. I also pumped them up to around 70 psi shortly before leaving. I don't know whether either of these related to the eventual blowout. The tires are rated between 65 psi and 80, so I would'nt think the inflation was an issue. The blowout occured on I70 just east of Burlington, CO. Last year I had a tire blowout on the horse trailer on this same stretch of road. Does anyone know whether they can just replace the right side of the truck bed, or does the whole bed needs to be replaced?

They can probably replace the side of the bed, I wouldn't see why they'd have to replace the whole thing. But first and formost, call the tire company before you call your insurance, see if they'll do anything. It'll be cheaper in the long run than going through your insurance, since insurance companies LOVE to jack up rates over stuff like this.

Seen that happen on my Father-in-law's truck, not as bad though. It's a good thing you were able to maintain control. I'm thinking if you had them properly inflated and not overloaded, you got a court case on your hands. Talk to the tire company, you might be able to drop hints of talking to your attourney about this to them. As much as I hate frivalous law suits, what could have been, I think warrants one.

The tire was a Venture AT (All Terain) (DOT H211 YD4A)

 

 

Specifically ... which Kumho Venture tire model was it. They have several with that name.

As a few others have mentioned, such a catastropic tire failure is rare with modern tire technology. I tend to think the tire may have had some damage such as a cut or gouge or perhaps it was defective.

 

The last time I had such a tire failure was when I hit something on the road and the tire immediately disintegrated.

 

Is it possible that the tire was underinflated or overloaded?

 

Scary stuff no matter the cause.

Do these tires have a load rating of "E"?

 

What the max. pressure listed on the tries sidewall?

 

I've checked TireRack (they list 3 different Kumho Venture AT's) and Kumho's site (lists 2 KV AT's) but the only sure way to check is to look at the tires themelves.

Yes, the tires were load E, 2003 model. I don't see how I could have hit anything in the road. I would think I would have felt some kine of contact from the front wheel, before the object would have hit the rear wheel. They were inflated to 70 psi (the range listed on the tire is 65 to 80 psi. The trailer load was way under its maximum loading which is 7,000 lbs. I was only hauling a double bed mattress, box spring and a couple of pieces of furniture. I am taking the truck into the drive-up claims window of my insurance company (American Family) tomorrow. I have the tire available if they want to see it. I'll post the outcome. Usually, in these cases, the insurance company will contact the tire mfg. and try and negotiate a contributory amount towards the settlement. I will try and take a couple of pictures of the actural tire and post them. Everyone might find them interesting. The tire is a real mess.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
