Hitch, what class and type

I am looking to add a hitch to my truck. I am looking at a class 2 and 3. I feel the class 3 will offer more options of what I can tow. I will be towing small fishing boats to some utility type trailers with topsoil and mulch.

 

What do you think is my best option? What brands would you recommend?

Class III all the way. Gives you more options and is significantly beefier. Reese, Draw-tite, HiddenHitch come to mind. I believe Reese and DrawTite are the same now.

I agree...go with the Class III.

You're not going to pay much more, but your options will be better on what you can tow.

Definitely get the class III. The weight of topsoil & mulch can add up pretty quickly, I would imagine that even with a class III hitch you could very quickly wind up with a trailer that weighs more than what the hitch is designed for.

 

When I was looking at hitches for my truck, the price from the dealer came out to nearly the same price as an aftermarket one, once you factor in the price of the wiring harness and everything. Of course, that might be different where you live, my choices up here are fairly limited. Also, the dealer was the only place that had the hitch in stock, everywhere else would have to special order it for me.

 

I think the stock hitches look best. My only complaint with it is that there isn't a 4 plug wiring adapter built in, they give you a big plastic adapter that plugs into the 7 pin connector. Other than that, I couldn't be happier with it.

 

Also, I would stay away from the Wal-Mart hitches that fits about 20 different models. You bolt the different pieces together in a configuration that fits your truck, instead of having one piece that is welded together to perfectly fit your truck. We have one of those on our Safari, it just doesn't feel nearly as sturdy as a hitch designed specifically for the vehicle. They're slightly cheaper, but in this case I think the extra $30-$40 is money well spent.
